I work with couples using the Gottman method, and I use several tools that I have learned over the years to address the particular needs of each client I work with.
Do you feel lost, questioning who you are or where you're going with no easy answers? Sometimes life takes an unexpected turn, we hit a bottom, or we just realize that something in us is different...or something must change. Such times of confusion and crisis are often the meeting point for our work together. They are also openings to self-discovery and real change. I listen deeply for what you want, develop a relationship of trust, and work WITH you to establish the clarity and direction you need.

As a queer and neurodivergent affirming therapist, I am passionate about working with folks whose experience is shaped by feeling "different"- due to sexuality, gender, ADHD/Autism, or relationship orientation. Many of my clients experience interpersonal challenges including social anxiety, people-pleasing, and fears of rejection. I am here to provide gentle feedback about the ways you can be kinder to yourself and practice firm but flexible boundaries.

Therapy is an active and collaborative process that can look and feel different to everyone. Regardless of the reason that brings you to therapy, within the therapeutic environment, the unique lens you experience the world through is valued and embraced. It takes work, time, and energy to explore and share parts of yourself with someone else. To honor your commitment, I will create a safe, judgement-free environment to support you, though at times it can be uncomfortable and challenging. You are in control of what is or isn’t explored or tried because of your individual preferences, readiness, or comfort.

My purpose is to do work to create change that is sustainable. A change that has space for complexity, reparation, and relating through difference. I have a plan, an offering, and a vision that I want to share with others to improve their quality of life. I want to help those that struggle with and question whether what they are doing matters. As a psychotherapist, the goal is for my clients to tap into their own power to create a positive change for themselves, while also helping to create a world that praises the uniqueness of each person and where humility and compassion are a given.

Therapy can sometimes feel awkward or uncomfortable. Being curious and open about our pains is not an easy task, which is why it is important to feel comfortable with the therapist you work with. The relationship between therapist and client is fundamental to creating a safer space in which this exploration can occur.

I specialize in working with sexual desire discrepancy and intimacy. Sexual desire discrepancy is when one person in a relationship wants sex more or differently than their partner(s). It is very common and occurs in otherwise happy and healthy relationships. Although common, desire discrepancy can lead to severe relational discord. Through a combination of psychosexual education, deep couple's work, and a compilation of the leading sexual desire discrepancy theories, I have designed a way of addressing desire discrepancy that offers you and your partner(s) a new way to be sexual together. It is not easy work, but it is rewarding.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
