The current state of the world can feel overwhelming, confusing, and scary. Those of us who hold marginalized identities have to work extra hard to feel safe, valid, and empowered. LGBTQIA+ communities, folks with different abilities, people who are a marginalized gender, as well as those who would like to explore their whiteness and their privilege- I am right here with you. Past traumas can often impact how we are able to show up for ourselves and others. We each have the ability to find our unique path to fulfillment and wholeness.

As an MA, LPC, I help individuals explore their thoughts, feelings and behavior to reach a more clear self-understanding and change long-standing patterns of behavior that may be disrupting relationships, work and study. The nonjudgemental and accepting nature of clinical mental health counseling makes it possible to face painful experiences. My client utilizes their capacity to change, seeking mental clarity, presence and balance. As a professional counselor I will work within clearly contracted, ethical boundaries, with respect for my clients, their values, their beliefs, their culture, to explore and resolve life difficulties.

People living with marginalized identities can feel disconnected from the power of choice and free will. Especially in a world that feels difficult to been seen, accepted and heard in systems of injustice. We tend to feel pressure to shrink or disappear but the best justice is self-acceptance, love and empowerment. I enjoy helping people people find their assertive voice, inner strengths and positive self to improve their relationships with others and themselves. My clinical focus includes Anxiety disorders, acute and complex trauma including childhood and organized religious harm, navigating sexual and gender identity.

Life is sometimes overwhelmingly heavy. The seemingly random moments of increased heart rate and shortness of breath. The feeling of drowning (and sometimes floating) that fogs your mind. The inability to make a clear decision - or just rushing through a decision because you can’t think clearly anyway. The having to backtrack because “Wait..what just happened?” The lack of appetite and sleepless nights. The increased appetite and the deepest sleep after the tears. It's all just exhausting. How much would you treasure having a clear mind again?

From an early age, we are surrounded by systems that shape our lives. These systems include our upbringing, our culture, and even our everyday language. In therapy, we are asked how we navigate these systems to create meaning in our lives. Through engaging these meanings, and openly acknowledging the role that suffering plays in our lives, psychotherapy addresses one’s psychological symptoms as well as one’s innermost fears and desires. This occurs in a manner that does not stigmatize the different, sometimes contradictory, aspects of our lives, but sees them as meaningful and as a way forward.

I help clients figure out LIFE. Life shouldn't feel as flat as a cold cup of coffee or tea. If you find yourself going through the motions of the day without a real sense of connection to yourself or those around you, or if you constantly feel overwhelmed, undersupported, burnt out, and sick and tired of feeling sick and tired, I get it! And you don't have to keep living that way! Those who benefit from therapy with me are those seeking to make an active change in their lives with a therapist who understands what it's like to navigate through this complex world.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
