It is my belief that scheduling a session with a counselor takes courage. I am aware that you are on a journey that has lead you to seeking help from me. I am sensitive to your past, accepting of your present and hopeful about your future. The most important aspect of the treatment process is the relationship between client and counselor. This is why I consider my clients as the expert on what challenges they are facing. I encourage my clients to take the lead and teach me about how the issues are impacting them.

You feel lost. Entirely alone in your struggles, like no one can understand what you’re going through. You desperately wish you had a better handle on things and feel like a failure for your shortcomings. But this problem isn’t unique. The experience is so common that there are memes about it. Everyone struggles; it’s perfectly normal. Of course, knowing that doesn’t make those thoughts and feelings go away. But that’s where we come in.

If an acorn contains within it an oak, so also you began your life with the prospect of becoming a certain person, your natural self. Like that young oak, which managed to grow somehow despite poor soil or too much shade or scarce water, you also have survived. But your growth has been affected by some toxic experiences, some injuries. Despite those woundings to your natural self, you can still imagine who you are meant to be. In fact you have already begun to realize who you really are, despite the distorting influences that you have been through.

Are you successful at work, but unhappy in life? You come home exhausted only to get into another fight with your partner or maybe your child. They say you don't listen. Meanwhile, your mind races with worries about the future and your family. Work feels empty and lifeless. What is going on?? You know there's more to life than work and accomplishments, but you don't really know where to find that extra juice you're looking for. Is talking to someone the answer? People seem to think so – they've been saying this all along. Maybe it's time to give this inner work a try. But how?

Everyone at times feels overwhelmed by life. The onset of a serious illness, the death of a loved one, and other events may have a profound impact on our daily lives. Traumatic events, whether expected or not, may affect our relationships with our spouse, family members, and others. They may also result in difficulties functioning at work and other aspects of our lives. Even welcomed life transitions, such as getting married, becoming a parent, embarking on a new career, or adapting to a new locality often bring surprising challenges that, if unmet, may accumulate causing disruptions in our lives.

I believe that all people have the potential to overcome whatever obstacles are in their life path, and our relationship is very important in helping you overcome those obstacles. So with that in mind, I will initially spend time just getting to know you and helping you feel comfortable and understood. You can expect a compassionate listener who will help you express issues that sometimes are uncomfortable to talk about. I will also help you establish goals for our work together that will be clear from the beginning of your treatment until the end.

I follow the philosophy that the client is the boss. As a client you know what brings you to ask for help. I will choose the model of therapy that I use based upon your desired outcome.. I believe that everyone needs therapy at some point in his/her life, so you are not alone. Together we will explore and identify the thoughts, behaviors, circumstances, or emotions that are causing you discomfort. Then we will choose the steps necessary to make the needed changes.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
