From time to time, everyone has struggles in life, whether it's adjusting to loss or transitions, coping with problems in relationships, or with balancing the demands of daily life. Though it can really help to talk things over with a professional counselor, sometimes people hesitate, fearing the possibility of being judged or not understood. I believe that providing a safe, trusting, and nonjudgmental environment is one of the most important elements of good therapy, an element that allows positive change to occur.

Loss is an inevitable and often painful part of life. Whether it be loss of a friendship, relationships, or loved one, the grieving process can be a daunting challenge to navigate. The pain of losing someone or something important to you may at times even feel like it’ll never go away. But, as the body is capable of hurting, so too is it capable of healing.

Life can be hard. Being a college student can be hard. Life transitions (like starting college) often make it clear that some things just aren’t working. Maybe you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, anxious, alone, or depressed. Emotions, worries, or confusion become overwhelming and lead to unhelpful patterns. You've tried everything, but nothing has worked. You wonder if it will ever get better. All you want is peace, stability, and confidence in the direction your life is going. To feel good about yourself and your choices. To feel comfortable in your own skin and to believe in your ability to succeed.

Did you know that members of the LGBTQ+ community experience mental illness at higher rates than their cisgender, heterosexual counterparts? It’s not because being queer makes you predisposed to poor mental health, but because the adversity and prejudice experienced by marginalized populations can take such a toll on one’s mind. I want to provide a safe space to process trauma and stress that may be linked to living in a society that’s becoming increasingly hostile to those who have been “othered” by those in power.

Are you feeling overwhelmed or exhausted? Do certain patterns in your life seem to persist, causing pain, discomfort, and frustration? Maybe there are past life experiences that feel hard to break free from. Therapy is a helpful tool in seeking relief from the things that hold us back emotionally, and it is my goal for each person who walks through my door to find support, empathy, and clinical expertise to achieve their mental health goals.

Our daily lives are constantly filled with demands, expectations, and challenges. At times, we may lose sight of our true selves and what truly matters to us. Therapy provides a secure, inviting, and authentic space for individuals to reconnect with their inner selves, process their emotions, and gain valuable insights.

I have worked with a myriad of different clients, and the thing I enjoy most is helping them to achieve their goals and live the life that they are striving for. We will work to identify your specific goals and them problem solve what skills you are lacking to achieve said goals. I enjoy working with clients going through major life transitions, along with addiction recovery and trauma survivors. My tag line, if you will, is "Broken Crayons Still Color". We are all recovering from various stressors and life circumstances, but amidst it all, there is always hope.

It is no secret that mental distress can be a devastating roadblock in life. It is my hope that together, we can create a completely safe and understanding environment in which we can work together toward achieving balance, implementing healthy coping strategies, and navigating life’s many obstacles toward growth. Therapy can be quite a daunting step to take for many, but I have no doubt in my mind that together, we can lay the foundation for personal growth.

I specialize in helping adults who want to explore the impact of trauma and/or improve their relationships with themselves. My goal is to help develop a deeper understanding of the root causes of client issues in addition to addressing current symptoms. I work collaboratively with clients to explore and understand their experiences, to utilize their innate strengths, and to build relationships with themselves that are rooted in self-compassion. I believe strongly that the quality and fit of the therapy relationship is what allows for the greatest positive change for clients, especially when they have experienced relational trauma.

When we experience distress in our lives, whether in the form of depression, from a traumatic experience, in response to a loss, or as a result of struggles with addiction - we are challenged by our minds and bodies to seek understanding, connection and healing. I have found that when we look at these challenges and face them together, we can find relief.

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
