A trusting foundation with your therapist is the beginning to successful therapy. Our life experiences, exposure to trauma, and current events often impact behaviors and responses to these events, which can lead to the feeling of being misunderstood or confused. These issues often impact relationships, health, work, and self-esteem. A trusting collaboration with clients provides empowerment into gaining insight and self-awareness. My therapy style provides helpful guidance when clients are searching for improvements to their lives.

My hope for our work together is that you are able to reach inside yourself and nurture the damaged parts of who you have been and move toward becoming the person you want to be. I have over thirty years of experience working with all forms of trauma (particularly early childhood attachment), chronic medical illness, immigrant realities, grief and loss, adoption, brain injury, shame, guilt, anxiety, depression and other forms of human struggles.

As a therapist in practice since 1982, I hope my compassionate and direct style of therapy will be the right fit for you. In your first visit, we will discuss what you're struggling with and how my interactive style of therapy can help you progress at a pace that's right for you. When you call me, it is the beginning of a collaborative process where we explore how to get you feeling more capable and hopeful to face life's challenges. I support new and not so new parents who are facing the transitions to parenthood. I have also helped many face infertility, grieve the loss of a pregnancy as well as face the many challenges that come with having a traumatic birth or special needs child. I am well versed in the adoption process and supporting the needs of adoptive families. I counsel adults to face the challenges of work, marriage, divorce and parenting that can trigger feelings of depression and anxiety.

When we encounter difficulties in our lives we are effected in physical, emotional, cognitive and spiritual ways. I work to help my clients understand how their history impacts them on many levels and how our past, overtime, creates patterns of communication and sets the stage that determines how we deal with life's ups and downs. If we can gain understanding of the past and connect the dots between where we began and where we are today, then we can begin to heal and create new effective ways to communicate, build healthy relationships and realize more fulfillment in our lives.

"My passion is working with children and adolescents ranging in age from 3-17; I also have experience with young adults. My specialty areas include ADHD, behavioral issues/aggression, anxiety, struggles with self-esteem and/or identity, emotional/mood difficulties, and childhood trauma/abuse. I also enjoy providing parent training and support. I have engaged in the practices of talk, play, sand tray, cognitive behavioral, lifestyle assessment, and other forms of expressive therapies to assist my clients in altering their behaviors, communicating their needs effectively, managing their anxiety/ mood, or processing past trauma.

My name is Barb Adams. I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. I have provided individual, couples, family, as well as group therapy for over 30 years. I also specialize in working with impaired professionals. I have an extensive history of working with many differing diagnoses. Some of my specialties include working with depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, among others. I have also spent over 10 years working specifically with impaired professionals in the medical and legal professions.

I have been providing psychological services to Mchenry county for the last 17 years. My experience is diverse and my approach to therapy is evidenced-based. I comprehend mental health issues from not only a psychological, but also from a social and neurological perspective. With this being stated I have developed a unique and comprehensive understanding of my clients. I have worked with several challenging clients and pride myself in my ability to modify treatment interventions for each client's unique needs. Essentially treatment is a team approach and I am here to walk with the client on the path to recovery.

One of Emma's greatest passions is to help teens and young adults develop confidence and a sense of direction within themselves so they can communicate and effectively establish a clear vision for who they would like to become. Whether this is helping in areas where they feel stuck, such as relationships, career, life transitions, or somewhere else, she strives to provide a safe environment for them to express what is on their minds, learn invaluable coping skills, understand the mind-body connection and address relationship issues to build a sense of connection with themselves and others.

I believe that humans are inherently resilient but that sometimes we need support to acknowledge our innate strengths in order to thrive. My ideal client is one who acknowledges that there are pieces of their life that need tending to. Whether it's life stress, grief, relationships, or identity, this person is open to the process of walking alongside someone who can assist them in building resiliency and becoming empowered.

My goal is to help others who struggle with substance use disorders, mental health disorders, religious trauma, human trafficking survivors, and life struggles, and to empower them to know that whatever life throws at them, they can get through the stress and come out on the other side.
