Hi, my name is Maria Mangiardi, and I hold an LCPC license. My approach to therapy is looking at the total mind, body, and spirit of a person and how all areas of life can affect mental health. I specialize in a variety of areas, such as Anxiety, Depression, LGBTQ, and OCD, to name a few. I look at the totality of a person because I find that possible medical issues, relationship issues, and environmental influences can be a factor. I typically work with adults over the age of 18. I have many clients that question their life relationships, stressors, and internal struggles.

I enjoy working with individuals that are ready to do something different. Often a person gets stuck in feeling the insanity of doing the same thing over and over again waiting for things to change. Only by making a change in your behavior can you expect a different outcome, some people need support to make a change that is lasting.

I work with clients experiencing a wide variety of concerns including anxiety, depression, relational problems, social isolation and bullying, family and parent-child conflict, school concerns, and a multitude of other presenting issues. I work from a compassionate, strengths-based approach and promote positive, healthy change through self-advocacy. Working from a systemic perspective with individuals, couples, and families allows me to assist my clients in actualizing the change they wish to see in their lives. In addition, I promote the process of change through differentiation of self and gaining an understanding of how individuals work and function within a system. I recently underwent a training in the Certificate Program in Traumatic Stress Studies through the Trauma Center at JRI and have also received training to become a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. I recently attended the Childhood Trauma Symposium to increase my efforts in being an effective trauma-informed clinician.

What stories are you telling yourself about who you are, how you got here, or what comes next? So much of who we are is made up of the world we live in, with all of its influences, mirrors, and connections. Maybe you're looking for someone to help unhook you from those unhelpful stories, or maybe you're in need of space to explore new ideas. Whatever the case, I'm glad you're here.

My passion for psychology was deeply inspired by Maya Angelou's courageous journey. Her emotional vulnerability and determination to share her story for the purpose of healing resonates deeply with me. Witnessing her strength and fearlessness in confronting her trauma has been truly inspiring. 24 years ago, I began my clinical journey, drawn by the transformative power of creative expression, just like Maya Angelou. Her ability to heal through writing has shown me the incredible potential for healing within each individual. I am committed to guiding others on their journey towards healing, drawing from extensive clinical experience.

I provide therapy to individuals with concerns related to relationships, family, anxiety, stress, depression, self-esteem, trauma, grief and loss, identity-related questions, life transitions, and experiences surrounding feeling stuck, conflicted, or unfulfilled.
I believe that therapy is a collaborative and creative process that unfolds through developing a strong alliance with a therapist. I strive to provide a warm, supportive, and nonjudgemental space for people to name, feel, and share their unique experiences. Although it can be difficult to put your emotional life into words, the decision to do so has the power to open up new ways of knowing and understanding yourself. It can also reveal patterns in your life that you might wish to explore in order to create space for more meaningful and satisfying possibilities.

Aging can be difficult--whether your own or in people you love. You might be grieving the loss of treasured relationships, frustrated with declining health, struggling with caregiving and changing roles ... or simply wanting to age gracefully. Many people experience worry, depression, and anger at times like this; others feel tired or overwhelmed; few know where to turn for information and guidance you can trust, from people who might understand. Aging is my specialty, and I would like the chance to help you reach some peace with your midlife crisis, life transition, grief or pain, caregiving, ... your life.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
