I enjoy working with those living with a variety of concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship issues, work stress, life transitions, LGBTQIA+ issues, and more.
Hi there, I'm Stacey Monroe, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over a decade of clinical experience. Over the years, I've worked with diverse populations in multiple settings, including medical social work, Employee Assistance Program (EAP), community mental health, homeless services, and private practice. As a unique individual, you deserve an approach that is tailored to your needs. While I take an eclectic approach to therapy, I primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Trauma-Focused CBT, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help you develop tools for success.

I have experience helping people to navigate grief, pain, depression, abuse, and the body’s response to trauma utilizing trauma-informed, person-centered, and attachment focused modalities.
Now accepting new clients! At times life can feel overwhelming with limited resources for care, support, and true healing. When you find yourself asking, “what is wrong with me,” I find it helpful instead to be curious about what happened to you and how your story is a resource to helping unlock ways in which you feel stuck in painful emotions or unhelpful behaviors. Often, we need a compassionate and non-judgmental presence to guide us through these parts of our lives and I am committed to creating that space for clients to enter their journey toward deep, lasting healing & flourishing.

I specialize in grief, loss, & trauma for children & adults, and in utilizing creative techniques for all ages, such as play therapy, art, storytelling, & mythology.
Grief, loss, and trauma can have a profound and lasting impact on you or people you love. You may feel isolated from others and overwhelmed as you try to go about day-to-day tasks; you may struggle to feel safe, express your emotions, or understand how to make meaning from all that has happened. Other people might be telling you to “get over” it, as if grief has a deadline you haven’t met. Traumatic events from your past may bring up feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, or shame, which can prevent you from doing the things you want to do, affect your relationships, and make it hard to communicate or set healthy boundaries with others.

I recently retired from more than 25 years in hospice. I have learned so much from my the patients and families in hospice, both in how they approached dying and death, and how learn they learned to live with grief while still finding joy and purpose in their lives. Both as a guide and a witness, I have helped my clients move through their grief to weave their loss into the larger tapestry of their lives. I believe that people can grow through their grief, in spite of the fact that grief really never ends.

Although I work with clients facing many different challenges, some of my areas of clinical interest include grief, shame, perfectionism, anxiety, family dynamics, and relationship struggles.
Now accepting new clients! I am passionate about walking alongside adults and couples on their healing journeys. I specialize in working with adults facing grief, anxiety, chronic stress, trauma, relationship struggles, and life transitions. As an existentially based therapist, I do not view myself as an expert on my clients (you are the expert on you!). Instead, I see myself as a fellow traveler in life, who knows that ultimately, we all need a safe space to share our thoughts, feelings, and fears. I provide this safety for my clients through my warm, compassionate, and culturally sensitive trauma-informed approach.

Sometimes life brings about intense challenges, pain and loss that can affect our ability to function and even maintain healthy relationships. We can feel stuck in the struggle and the difficult emotions that often come with it. Therapy provides a safe space to explore these challenges, gain control over our emotions and learn how to move forward, towards overall balance and wellbeing.

I specialize in trauma recovery, stress management, mood disorders, short term problem solving, grief and loss, personality disorders, and learning disabilities.
"I am a firm believer in finding balance between feelings, thoughts, beliefs, and actions. Sometimes what we are dealing with is simply present day stress, needing a safe environment to process and get feedback. Other times events from our past dictate our reactions to today's experiences. This leads to giving our power away and continuing to suffer. I practice cognitive behavioral therapy, as well as other approaches when indicated, always focusing on the client's goals. I am focused on respectful approaches to teaching tools that allow each client's efforts to result in positive impacts throughout their lives."

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
