I specialize in couples counseling, family counseling, counseling with men, and premarital counseling. I help clients make meaning of their struggles, articulate their desires, and collaborate to reach their goals. I normalize and interpret conflict in terms of differences, identity, connection, and power issues. Intimacy and anger, stress and time constraints, are often the focus of our work together. I tend to be fairly transparent and strengths-focused. I also specialize in the integration of spirituality and psychotherapy.

I practice what I like to call relationship therapy. This means I work best with people who are psychologically-minded and want to develop a therapeutic relationship with me. Together (key word!) we seek to understand (another key word) the roots of your emotional distress. My belief is that these roots may be hidden or disguised, but never totally beyond one's grasp. Change is always possible.

Life is never straightforward, and we are often left facing changes that are both surprising and difficult to navigate. Our routines are thrown off and we find ourselves living life in ways that we never imagined. Yet, as uncertain as it all may feel, we try to manage these struggles as best we can. It is through the turmoil we encounter and the perseverance that follows that we truly learn the essence of our souls. Whether you're at crossroads, distressed over troubled relationships, facing difficult challenges. or looking for meaning in life, I can work with you as you explore through your journey of self-discovery.

I provide quality mental health counseling and therapy that is thoughtfully tailored to your needs. Our work together will address concerns in an empowering and centering way that produces substantive change. My approach is connective (Therapy works best when we are able to connect and work well together) and directive (by directive I mean that I give things for you to do during the week like writing, journaling, reading, exercises, reflections, and/or activities). I'm known for being helpful with people who have been through therapy and haven't had success. I help people find aliveness, creativity, and strength.

The foundation of my work with clients is based on the belief that "it's the relationship that heals." Relationships are vital to our emotional and psychological growth and how we take care of them is important. My goal is to provide a safe, respectful, and empathic place to discuss those situations that matter to you most. I lean toward a relational, psychodynamic, and spiritual approach to the therapeutic process and provide a place to process the meaning of your experiences and help you reconstruct them to reduce barriers to your emotional health.

I help clients develop "mindfulness" to gain easy access to a self that is integrated and connected with others. I focus not on what is wrong but on what would help restore a sense of sanity and mental health to the expanding experience of life

Everyone experiences change in life, and sometimes those transitions are hard to manage alone. Uncomfortable feelings are a signal that it's time for something to change. I can assist you in exploring your options and making choices to put you back on track. My goal is to help you gain confidence and feel more in control. Feelings are normal, but can seem overwhelming without an outlet. Together we can discover ways to improve your comfort with yourself and those you care about, whether you are dealing with a loss or one of the other bumps along life's road.

Welcome; I enjoy helping people cope with anxiety, depression, anger management, couple relationships, and life transitions. (divorce, loss, career change, family relationships) I have a directive, practical approach that balances understanding and support with guidance and direction. I believe that in order for therapy to be meaningful, it is important to work together and create an individualized approach which is a unique match for your concerns and style. Life's moments are filled with joy, disappointment, triumph and challenges. Many of these experiences leave us feeling exhilarated, overwhelmed and in search of a new path in a different direction. I believe that the therapeutic environment is a safe space where mutual trust, honesty and insightful dialogue allow you to nurture, heal and replenish yourself. The therapeutic relationship is essential to my clinical approach; a collaborative effort to support and challenge as we establish and progress toward identified goals.

I believe that everyone is doing the best they can in life given their knowledge and experience to date. Unfortunately, sometimes past ways of operating are not always helpful given the current challenges you may be facing. If you are feeling stuck in old patterns, or overwhelmed with life's current challenges, and would like to explore more productive ways of living, please consider giving me a call. I would enjoy working with you to create positive changes in your life.

You spend years looking for someone who gets you, someone who completes you in so many ways. Sometimes you just can't find that person. Or you always mess it up. Or you do make a life with someone, and then you discover that you're arguing all the time, hurt, and lonely. Maybe relationships are not your issue: It's a career thing, an illness or a loss that you can't bounce back from. As human beings, we seem to need to give ourselves to things, to love and be loved. So why is it so hard?

We all find ourselves at times in our life that we require nurturance to help us through life's changes. Loss in our lives requires care and guidance by a professional. Loss may be defined in various ways, it may be death, divorce, depression, addictions, infidelity, anxiety, infertility just to name a few. I work to specifically assist individuals, couples, families and groups to alleviate emotional disorders, to understand conscious and unconscious motivation, to resolve emotional, relationship and attitudinal conflicts and to help modify behaviors that interfere with effective emotional, social adaptive, and intellectual functioning.

Now Accepting new clients (daytime hours 12pm-5pm). As humans, we experience an endless amount of transitions, highs, and lows that cumulatively come to define who we are. In this process, we may find ourselves struggling with anxiety, depression, and fear of the unknown. In an effort to cope with these challenges, we often develop patterns of thinking and behaving that don't serve us or honor our unique strengths and resiliency. In my practice, I work with individuals to create meaning from difficult experiences and to develop coping strategies that allow them to live with a greater sense of peace, personal power, and authenticity.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
