From previous experience in inpatient, residential, outpatient and group practice settings working with clients who have mood disorders, substance use, tics, or trouble concentrating with day-to-day tasks.
The first step is the hardest to do alone when you may be struggling with anxiety, stress, depression or inability to focus. That is where we would work together to build a trusting alliance to identify your goals and the steps that it would take to get there. Each person is different, and I tailor each experience to your individual needs.

I offer CBT-styled treatment, and person/strengths-based treatment, and have extensive experience in working with substance use.
Life can be challenging. Everyone wants to be heard, and it is important to have an outlet. It can be hard to reach out when in need of support, and it can be even harder to find the right therapist for you. When first meeting with a client I focus on building a therapeutic alliance. I want to know your interests and what's important to you. I understand that in order for someone to make change support and care need to be built through trust. Trust doesn't come easy, but with patience, it can be built. I aim to develop a strong bond with each of my clients. You are not alone, we will walk together on your healing journey.

I believe that everyone should have a safe place to discuss their feelings with a person who is there to listen, non-judgmentally, and not offer advice but rather assist the individual in working through their feelings for a satisfactory resolution.

Personally, I know how difficult it was for me to get out of bed when suffering from depression and anxiety and to go about the everyday when concerned about having another panic attack. I know how valuable it was for me to have someone to talk to that wouldn't judge me or make me feel guilty about being exactly where I was at the time. The idea of "you should be fine", or "you have no reason to be anxious or depressed" is hurtful and doesn't help.

"In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or step back into safety" (Abraham Maslow). Deciding to make changes in one's life takes courage. For many of us life can be difficult. Whether it's addiction, depression, relationship issues or just the fears and insecurities of life, we all have challenges we must face. Therapy is meant to be a safe place where we are able to find courage to walk through these challenges and to find real hope with practical help.

We all have the capacity for meaningful change and are deserving of a life of fulfillment. Sometimes we find that it can be difficult to make those changes and engage in daily living in ways that feel good to us. Barriers can show up in our lives in many ways. " What consumes your mind, controls your life" Are you or someone you know dealing with something right now that does not seem to end? Feeling like giving up? Frustrated? Afraid? Feeling confused and needing direction? Maybe you have been feeling like no one understands, or that you can handle it on your own. As much as we would all like to handle it on our own, the truth is everyone can use someone to talk with. I am a believer in experiences making you who you are. These experiences can either consume you, or shape you.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
