Individuals seek out therapy to address a wide range of issues and struggles. However, I believe that everyone is looking for a place where they can feel safe and understood. I feel that I am able to provide this environment and that through our relationship, you will uncover your own strengths, develop new understandings, and grow and change in meaningful ways. As a seasoned Clinical Social Worker with over thirty years of experience, I have had the privilege of taking this journey with many others and would love the opportunity to do so with you.

I work with adults who are struggling with depression and change of life issues (i.e., job loss, divorce, illness), and in particular those who are experiencing grief and loss. I have a great deal of experience working with the aging adult population and the issues that accompany this phase of life. I believe that most issues have an associated spiritual component to them, and if the client wishes to incorporate spirituality into the therapeutic work, I am comfortable doing so. The short term goal of therapy is symptom reduction, while the long-term goal is transformation.

My specialities include the following: anxiety, depression, grief, substance abuse, and autism.
I am licensed Clinical Psychologist. My mission is to help individuals uncover their true potential and lead lives that are more connected and fulfilling. I'm here to tell you that you don’t have to be controlled by your thoughts and you can bounce back from adverse life events. With cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), you can challenge the thoughts and behaviors that are holding you back. I want you to use your emotions instead of being used by them and to use your strengths to find and enjoy more things you are naturally good at. Becoming resilient will allow you to cope effectively with both negative and positive life events.

I have 14 years' experience helping people with grief and loss and people who are challenged with making life transitions, be it personal, relationship, career.
“The only constant in life is change.” While we know this to be true, we are more acutely aware of it at certain times than at other times. If your life is changing and you’re not sure where you’re headed, I can help. Perhaps you have outgrown where you are, be that in a relationship or job. Maybe someone important to you died and you are struggling with the loss. Or there have been other losses and you are feeling unsure of who you are. If you are in a difficult transition and feel stuck, confused, or anxious, I can help.

Perhaps you’re overwhelmed right now and are looking for help addressing stress, anxiety or grief. Maybe you’re depressed and you’d like to see improvement in your mood. Perhaps it’s the loss of a relationship or problems with the one you’re currently in that brought you here. Maybe you want to be heard and understood and improve communication in your relationships. You might even be noticing that your drinking has increased and that concerns you. In therapy, you'll get support in managing concerns like these. You probably want someone who is easy to talk to, who will listen to you and guide you, yet without judging you.

My experience and expertise includes working with with anxiety, depression, unexplained physical symptoms, substance abuse/dependence, bipolar and mood disorders, issues of identity, eating and exercise disorders, grief & loss, performance, motivation, PTSD, and chronic stress.
Personally, I know how difficult it was for me to get out of bed when suffering from depression and anxiety and to go about the everyday when concerned about having another panic attack. I know how valuable it was for me to have someone to talk to that wouldn't judge me or make me feel guilty about being exactly where I was at the time. The idea of "you should be fine", or "you have no reason to be anxious or depressed" is hurtful and doesn't help.

In life, we face a myriad of transitions, which impact us throughout every decade of our journey. Such transitions often cause anxiety, depression and/or a sense of sadness, loneliness or loss of direction. We may wonder "who am I now" or "where do I belong". Life changes impact our relationships with romantic partners, our parents, our children and our friends. I specialize in working with people as they navigate life's transitions. I help clients to understand and make sense of what can bring greater satisfaction into their lives, with a focus on building more effective and adaptive coping skills.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
