At some point everyone faces difficult times. The unpredictability of emotions we experience when facing uncertainty and change can sometimes leave us feeling overwhelmed and unsure of how to manage things. At times, feelings related to depression, overwhelming anxiety, loneliness, and overall confusion can just stop us in our tracks. Our identity and roles in career and businesses may change or need improvement. Our relationships can sometimes become strained struggling with communication and connection to the people and groups we must find solutions with to maintain healthy connections. My job is to help in these areas.

I practice from two different modalities: Reality Therapy and Insight Therapy. Reality Therapy (Choice-Centered approach) helps the patient determine how effective their behaviors have been in fulfilling their needs and then works with the patient to determine a plan for more effective actions. Insight Therapy encourages empowerment of the individual which implies personal responsibility for one's behavior. I specialize in working with patients needing assistance with Anger Management, Marital/Premarital Counseling, Individual/Adolescent Counseling, Loss & Bereavement Recovery, Sexual Addiction/Recovery, Personal Growth & Enrichment, and Divorce Healing. I also possess knowledge in understanding acute mental illness symptoms from my training at Riverside Psyciatric Hospital.

I am accepting new patients! I specialize in depth psychotherapy, treating the root of the problem instead of only treating surface symptoms. This approach helps patients like you get better and, even more importantly, stay better. This approach takes time and effort, but it can be life-changing. I meet patients at whatever place they are at in life and help them develop at a pace that is reasonable for them. My approach starts with carefully creating goals for treatment together. From there, we decide on the best course of action and move towards aims like less pain, better relationships, better job performance, and much more.

Through collaborative effort, healing and thriving are possible. Happiness is possible. Yet, there are many adverse events, conditions, and circumstances that make healing, happiness, and thriving seem out of reach. Together, we can work to gain insight, accept what we cannot change, and discern a path forward. I am grateful for the opportunity to help others re-orient themselves with their minds in a way that makes them look forward to life and all it has to offer.

I believe that healing can happen through the process of empathic and supportive counseling. I work with mood issues, personality disorders, grief, substance use and more. I utilize a culturally sensitive and holistic psychodynamic style of therapy. This approach encourages development in all areas of life, and pays special attention to unconscious factors, childhood upbringing, trauma, and cultural identity (race, religion, sexuality, gender, disability, etc). I am currently accepting clients for group therapy, that will combine the sport/art of crew rowing with group talk therapy. This is a powerful way of feeling connection.

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
