I am certified to treat clients with PTSD/trauma, substance abuse and addiction.
My approach to therapy is driven by empathy, trust, connection and compassion. Though there are multiple clinical orientations at my disposal, I believe the primary means of change lies in developing a strong therapeutic relationship, and carefully listening to your story. My background in family systems theory enables me to work with you in considering how multiple factors including your relationships, health, and spirituality are impacting your daily life.

When alcohol or other drug use becomes problematic, the mind, body, and spirit are negatively impacted. Behavioral choices, when under the influence, tend to multiply life problems. This sometimes leads to feelings of hopelessness, a sense of being on a merry-go-round that never stops. Often there are feelings of guilt and shame because much of society still judges alcohol/drug misuse, believing it to be the result of a weak will or flawed moral values.

What is the goal of your marriage or relationship? Relationships are vital to becoming a whole person. At times, connecting with your spouse may feel magical, but every relationship goes through tough seasons. I understand how overwhelming it can feel when distance and resentment are the only things growing between you. At times, it may feel like the hurt you are experiencing is not worth the effort. Maybe your relationship is still strong but some small adjustments are needed to reconnect and recapture the zest it once had. Whatever the case, there is always hope. I can help!

I work with people to find a path to less stress, more enjoyment & pleasure in life. Working together we can develop & enhance the experiences of your life to feel more whole and fulfilling. Create a life more satisfying; transmute stress causing difficulty into energy for working towards your goals. Sometimes we are stuck in life situations that block creativity and success. Goals often include happiness, pain relief (physical, mental, spiritual, emotional), finding passion, achievement, self-awareness, productivity, insight, more socialization, healthy relationships (a new one), freedom, joy, meaning, and contentment with life.

People encounter many different challenges in everyday life. Some benefit from assistance that comes from outside of the home or work site. Treatment works when a person feels heard and respected while in the presence of a positive and safe therapeutic alliance. I have worked with adults, adolescents, and with families through a variety of life challenges and issues over the years. Some, but not all of those are listed in either the specialty or treatment sections. If you are seeking support with something that isn't listed, please give me a call to talk about what it is that are you looking for.

Going through the motions day-after-day has covered up the real you. You have spent a lot of time checking off the boxes that you thought would bring you happiness. Instead, you still feel like something important is missing. All you need is a few more hours in the day, but your to-do list never ends. It’s overwhelming and depressing. You feel unappreciated, unseen and exhausted. You know solutions and clarity are out there, but the direction you need is unknown. You’ve made a few changes and read self-help books but nothing you try seems to stick. You end up anxious, depressed and feeling fragmented. I can help!

The client is the authority about his/her needs and hopes. If we work together I believe we can achieve the goals we agree upon as we come to know each other. I've worked with couples, families, organizations, and friends in resolving relationship issues for 20 years. I believe attachment issues, trauma and disturbing memories influence our sense of self and can effect how we interact and respond or react in all our relationships. Trauma is personal, some examples are the death of a pet, infidelity, death, war, natural disasters, sexual trauma, growing up in a unstable environment.

I incorporate the Multidimensional Partner Trauma Model from the Association of Partners of Sex Addiction Trauma Specialists into my work with hurting partners.
As a family systems therapist with an interest in couples reconciliation therapy and healing relational trauma from infidelity, I am passionate about walking beside you to work through the pain and confusion of your life situation.  Intimate betrayal is one of the most devastating and disorienting events that can happen to a relationship.  The betrayed partner is left questioning fundamental beliefs and wrestling with the very existence of truth, love and relationship history. I also work with couples who long to enhance communication, connection, and build shared long term goals and values.

My specialty is working with women and the many issues that women struggle with in today's society; depression, anxiety, panic attacks, pre-marital counseling, self esteem, substance abuse, childhood trauma, abusive relationships (both emotionally and physically abusive), parenting issues, codependency, assertiveness and boundary setting and of course, stress management.
I provide a safe and nonjudgmental environment for my clients. I believe that my job as a therapist is to work in a partnership with clients in learning more about themselves, resolving past pain and then achieving personal happiness. I do not believe in forcing my lifestyle or goals on a client but rather helping them find out who they are, what goals they have for themselves and what positive and healthy ways they can achieve these goals. Personal growth and happiness is a goal that is unique to each individual. There is not just one way to achieve happiness.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
