Everyone who comes to counseling is experiencing some form and level of fear- whether they are fully aware of it or not. The capacity for fear serves to protect us- but limits as well. Many experience anger and not the underlying fears. Fears can lead to counter-productive behaviors that hurt the self or others in forms of passing up opportunities, as self-sabotage, and avoiding or ending relationships. It is rewarding to help people to identify, address and work through self-imposed or other-imposed limits, have healthy boundaries, achieve their goals and find deeper meaning in life.

It takes courage to contact a psychologist for help. I make every effort to offer you a nonthreatening & comfortable environment in which to learn & grow & feel better. I specialize in the treatment of anxiety, depression, & relationship issues. I draw from several orientations but emphasize cognitive behavioral techniques because they are effective & easy to use. I am active in the session & believe psychotherapy is most successful when it is a collaborative process. Together we will work toward eliminating self defeating patterns of behavior & achieving an optimal level of functioning & improved quality of life.

For over a decade, I’ve helped young men struggling with anger, fear, and depression.
You just got into another fight with your teenage son, and you feel terrible about it. All you wanted to do was talk, to tell him that you’re worried about him, but as usual, the conversation quickly devolved into another screaming match. You feel so helpless watching him make the same mistakes over and over. Isolating himself, turning to harmful coping methods, hanging around the wrong people. You’re terrified that if he keeps going in this direction, he may never be able to dig himself out of it. As a parent, you only want him to be happy, but nothing you try seems to get through. And it feels like you’re running out of options.

Sometimes life gets overwhelming, hopes get waylaid by life challenges, relationships turn out not as dreamed. Sometimes the transitions in life--child to adult, single to married, married to single, working to retired--created emotional/mental barriers in our lives. Or even the challenge to figure out what your dreams are can be challenging. Therapy/coaching/ workshops/classes contain tools and information that will facilitate personal growth, healing from past trauma, anxiety, depression and relationship issues.

**3 Day Intensive EMDR Sessions NOW AVAILABLE** Understanding our past can help bring clarity to our current experiences and provide readiness for an amazing future. I understand the challenges faced by those who serve our communities as well as members of our communities. Intensive EMDR sessions provide extensive therapy in a short period of time and are provided in extended hours outside the typical weekly therapy schedule. Research shows that intensive therapy for trauma can be extremely effective in reducing symptoms.

Immediate openings, no waitlist. Everyone experiences periods of challenge in life. it's natural to feel stuck. Many also live with added mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, addiction, loss/grief & more. When wrestling with these challenges, it often leaves a sense of disconnectedness. It can interfere with important relationships, & it can block us from successfully pursuing important goals. This disconnectedness can lead to existential voids & unpleasant or frightening thoughts. Yet proven evidence-based treatments for this phenomenon exist.

I draw my tools from many different therapeutic approaches which include Bowen, narrative, CBT, solutions-focused, EFT, and existential models.
One of my primary interests is that of free will. It is my own personal belief that addiction, trauma, and other mental health issues either subvert or inhibit our free will as well as our own personal development into an authentic individual. My ideal client is an individual that is seeking to work through the restraints and obstacles they experience to live a more intentional life. I enjoy learning about people's lives and asking questions to understand their unique experiences. Everyone has amazing stories, and your life is full of color.

I strive to focus my practice with the understanding that many of the issues with which we struggle do not fit into neat categories, nor do they always lend themselves to simple interventions.
**Currently accepting new clients** I earned my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Philosophy from the University of Utah, and my Master’s in Social Work from BSU. My experience studying, researching, and teaching Philosophy has given me a broad lens from which to view each individual and tailor my approach to their unique needs.

It can be difficult to change even if we are aware where we would like to go. It can be frustrating when we ask ourselves “How did I get here?” or “I know what is wrong, I feel powerless to change?” These are important questions to be asking and shows an awareness that a part of you is recognizing that your able to change and you’re working on ways of undergoing this process.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
