As a generalist, Scott finds that he works from an integrative lens, naturally leaning towards a client-centered, strengths-based, and multicultural perspectives. Often, he likes to integrate aspects of Interpersonal Therapy, family systems, psychodynamic, and cognitive-behavioral theories with the bio-psycho-social framework. With extensive college counseling center experience (18+ years), Scott enjoys working with this population and understands the difficulties that often emerge during this transitional process (identities, relationships, self-awareness, etc.). Scott believed no concern is too big or too small to seek support.

I blend an integrative healing philosophy with humanistic, interpersonal, and behavioral methods to further create a space in therapy for an individual to feel courageous, connected, and whole.
Accepting new therapy clients for Fall 2024! I enjoy meeting with high school/college/graduate students and professionals who want to live life with authenticy, courage, and purpose and who are seeking ways to recharge and reconnect to themselves. Although experiences of life, including trauma, anxiety, or depression as well as changes or expansions of our responsibilities may impact how we think, feel, and behave these life experiences, while overwhelming at times, can also lead to the greatest growth, discovery, and reclaiming confidence and perhaps above all discovering that life is truly meaningful even while imperfect.

I believe that the essence of life is Divine and that all good flows from that source. Thus, any strength that emerges in my work occurs as I align myself with Divine love, wisdom, and purpose. Holism describes my perspective, thus systematically exploring many areas of a client's life helps prepare the ground for resolving current problematic issues or for encouraging and supporting growth and transformation.

I want to help clients build the strength and confidence to face major life transitions and effectively work through uncomfortable emotions. If someone is struggling with postpartum depression, for example, I will support them until they realize they’re not alone and they are feeling able to cope. When you work with me, you’ll become more confident in asking for help and reaching out to resources and supports. Overall, I will help you find a sense of hope that it's not always going to be like this.

All of us have some hard and difficult times in life and we need some help. Although this can be humbling, it usually pays off in the end. I am a very flexible and laid back person and am here to help you with whatever it is you are struggling with. There will be no judgment and we will work on what only you want to work on. I believe there is no magic answer to everything and not everything works for everybody, so it is you and I trying to figure out what works best for you.

I'm accepting new clients. I believe every human wants to belong and seeks connection to others. This can be more challenging for some, causing unnecessary suffering and isolation. I believe that everyone deserves to feel like they belong and can function at their highest potential, regardless of the trauma they endured. I know that bearing your most vulnerable self to a complete stranger can be intimidating but I will provide you with a non-judgemental, compassionate, and caring space for you to do your hard work to achieve your mental, emotional, and social goals.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
