With a decade of experience, I am passionate in working with individuals to address addictive or compulsive behaviors with a focus on substance abuse and gambling treatment.
I believe when given a safe and supportive place to explore our experiences and ourselves, we have the ability to gain awareness of our potential. As a therapist, I strive to encourage autonomy, advocacy, and personal growth within the individuals that I have the opportunity to work with.

I have worked in the mental health and substance abuse field for 20+ years.
All of us have some hard and difficult times in life and we need some help. Although this can be humbling, it usually pays off in the end. I am a very flexible and laid back person and am here to help you with whatever it is you are struggling with. There will be no judgment and we will work on what only you want to work on. I believe there is no magic answer to everything and not everything works for everybody, so it is you and I trying to figure out what works best for you.

Some of the issues I treat include anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, stress management, relational conflict, and major life transitions.
It’s my goal to help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself and how you can live in a way that feels authentic and fulfilling. Whether it’s offering a different perspective, being an empathetic listener, or implementing boundaries, I believe empowerment mixed with a healthy dose of challenging your mind and fears can help you to reach your potential. Getting started can feel intimidating, but whatever you are dealing with, you don’t have to do it alone. I thoroughly enjoy showing people how transformative therapy truly can be. My clients have described my style as warm and empathetic, but willing to challenge them when needed.

In the years that I have been working as a mental health provider, I have met with individuals from a broad range of backgrounds. My clients have a variety of mental health problems, relationship issues, life transitional periods, grief and loss, trauma, and similar hardships. Some clients know what they suffer from and are ready to make changes. Some of my clients have felt something has been "off" for some time but do not know where to start, so I help them to assess the problem areas and track their progress between sessions. Changes happen at different speeds to different people for different reasons.

Therapy is an act of courage and self-advocacy to explore the uniqueness and depths of the human experience. It is an act inspired by curiosity and growth, aimed to guide you through your evolution to become whoever you want to be. It is a tool for humans to utilize as a way to explore the depths of who they are, work towards a narrative that aims to accept themselves as who they are, and work toward evolving into the vision of who they hope to be. I believe that most clients have what they're looking for when they walk through the doors. Therapy is a tool used to excavate and nurture what they already possess.

You are probably here because the bottom dropped out and you are worried it is going to get worse. That does not feel good. But you are right, therapy is one way to turn it around. Draw the line and flip the script. The way out is through, dropping the sugar-coated language- it's going to be hard. That may sound dark, but the hope is right behind. The Tao Te Ching says: "the main road is simple, but people love to be sidetracked." Therapy relies on centralizing elements that have been minimized in daily life: listening, speaking authentically, supporting one another, slowing down, being present, and being seen.

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
