I have experience working with adolescents and young adults addressing a variety of concerns, with a focus on treating Anxiety Disorders and OCD.
Our world is fast paced. So, it makes sense that many individuals struggle with feelings of anxiety, isolation, or shame when they want to feel grounded, connected, and at peace. I help my clients to explore these and similar concerns and express themselves authentically.

Are you experiencing a mind-body disconnect? The individuals I work with typically are struggling with issues such as eating disorders, depression, and anxiety issues. They want to be freed from being stuck in their head, and we work collaboratively to work through goals that create more mental peace. Typical symptoms I see in my practice are restrictive eating, binge eating, lack of pleasure or joy, and worried or obsessive thoughts. I see individuals ages 12 and up and work with all genders.

Zach is proud to announce that The Anxiety and OCD Center of Iowa is a regional clinic for the National Social Anxiety Center.
Have you ever had the thought "Maybe I have a problem with anxiety?" One of the worst things about anxiety (aside from the feeling) is the avoidance it creates in a person's life. From mildly interfering with enjoyment to outright avoiding things altogether, anxiety can be paralyzing. Whether it's related to social situations, more generalized, panic attacks, phobia, agoraphobia, or related disorders such as OCD. These are my first and foremost areas of expertise. One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is seeing and comparing the progress a person makes along the way.

Another focus of mine has been OCD and other anxiety disorders.
If you have ever asked yourself if you are living as well as you could then counseling may be for you. I find most people (including my clients) can get by just fine on their own. I am here to help them do more than "just get by." My goal is to help you live the life you want and enjoy it more fully. How to better manage anxiety, improve mood, improve coping skills, and better your interpersonal relationships are something I enjoy helping people with. I also address people's history of trauma and how that may be affecting their life and/or relationships.

Like many of us, most of my clients are seeking greater meaning in their lives, improved connection and satisfaction in relationships, and relief from loneliness, worry, rumination, and shame. My practice is based on values that emphasize acceptance/non-judgment, compassion, and authenticity. We all need a space where we don't feel judged and are free to explore who we are, what we want, and who we want to become.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
