Hi, I’m Allison. I received my master's from the University of Northern Iowa’s trauma-informed program and have worked in the field as an advocate for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. I am especially passionate about working with these populations and others such as survivors of abuse, violence, family trauma, and experience with the child welfare system. I also enjoy working with couples and working through conflicts to meet your goals individually and together. Experiencing abuse, violence, and trauma can look and feel different for everyone, sometimes making it hard to trust others and open up.

I enjoy working with people who are looking to make a change in their life, and unsure where to start. Whether they are someone who has tried therapy previously, or someone new to the process. I can assist in setting SMART goals and working through the stages of change to accomplish these goals. Most recently, I have enjoyed the challenge of working with therapists who are needing support in addressing their unique needs throughout the therapy process.

Let’s face it—Life is HARD! For many of us the pressures of the world are often times overwhelming, and we are living each day just trying to keep our head above water. Some of us are in crisis, some of us are struggling, some of us are surviving the daily pressures of living. But what if we could be thriving? What would that look like? Where do we begin?

Do you like coffee or tea? Me too. Let me pour you a cup and let’s talk! Good therapy starts with a genuine connection. I will value and validate your unique experiences and perspectives, so that genuine connection starts from the very first session. As a social justice-minded and culturally competent counselor, I provide a very empathetic and safe space for my clients to talk about some pretty heavy issues. Have you felt like an outsider? Do you struggle with the grind culture? Are you experiencing relationship issues? Maybe stuck in a funk? Anxious and not sure why? If so, I think we should meet!

Imagine yourself feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, struggling to focus due to ADHD, or dealing with the heavy weight of depression. Perhaps you've experienced trauma that's left a lasting impact, or you're finding it difficult to navigate through grief after losing someone important to you. Maybe you're facing challenges in your relationships, feeling misunderstood, or having trouble connecting with others. These are some of the issues my clients face.

I believe that everyone deserves a place to feel safe and heal and I pride myself in providing a warm and welcoming space to do just that. The experiences that we face daily shape our decisions as well as what we have been through. Not only do I understand both sides of the mental health chair, I believe that it can lead to learning from each other. I am focused on the betterment of my clients in any way possible. I use humor often and find it a useful tool in healing and processing life.

I am Janet Schuster, a National Certified Counselor (NCC), Certified Clinical Traumatologist, and tLMHC, and I’m here to help. I received my master’s degree from Divine Mercy University which provided a Catholic-Christian lens with which to see the dignity and goodness of all human persons. I welcome clients from all backgrounds and beliefs. Incorporating the client’s faith can be a meaningful aspect of therapy for those wishing to do so, but I do not impose my beliefs on others. I believe anyone can navigate life’s challenges and move toward a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
