I have been helping others realize their mental health goals for over 23 years. I utilize a client-centered approach because I believe therapy should focus on each individual client's wants and needs, which vary from person to person. I often use humor in therapy, because I believe laughter is one of the greatest things you can share in this life. I have excellent experience with young children, teens, adults, couples, and families. I have helped people with anger, depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, substance abuse, relationship and life changes, impulse control, and many other topics.

We all have a story to tell, and no one story is the same as the next. We are all humans out here trying to do the best we can with what we have and what we know; however, sometimes we forget that we don’t need to do it alone. In exchange for you telling your story, I will provide you with a safe and inclusive experience. I can be a sounding board with new perspectives, a provider of encouragement that challenges you to see and seek your true potential, and/or an advocate who holds you accountable in working towards a better life.

If you are struggling with relationships, family, stressful work situations or living with other difficult situations, we can work together to help you feel stronger and more resilient. I've worked with clients from ages 18 to 80 and have a strong connection to the LGBTQ and college communities. I help clients grow through adversity by helping you to better understand what is most important to you in life. I help you to set goals that you want to work toward, and we work collaberatively to get you going in the direction that has the most meaning for you. I am currently accepting new clients through Lyra Health, an EAP company.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
