EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) is used as a component of treatment for many disorders, some of which are anxiety, depression, panic attacks, and trauma.
I am a licensed psychologist who has been in private practice for 38 years. You may be reluctant to consult a psychologist even though you feel overwhelmed and stressed. You might think that it is a weakness to talk to a professional about your situations or problems. Being willing to open up and share your concerns is an important step in finding solutions and is a sign of strength. You might benefit from realizing you are not alone and can be understood. Dr. Silke will be respectful of your spiritual/religious beliefs and will incorporate them into therapy as desired.

I am an EMDR-certified, somatic and spiritual therapist committed to liberation-centered mental health care and healing working through an anti-oppressive, anti-racism, and social justice-oriented approach.
Therapy is not only for times of crises and hitting "rock bottom." It is a space for self-exploration, reflection, and intention setting. I recognize that seeking therapy and professional support can be intimidating. I support folks in overcoming stuckness, and ambivalence, disrupting internalized toxic and limiting beliefs, and finding their voice and confidence through spiritual and ancestral healing and practices to encourage optimal changes in the mind, community, body, and spirit.

Aloha, my name is Kalei Piena (Deborah) and I have been a therapist for several years with a private practice in Hilo, HI. I have a degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, and I use a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approach to therapy most of the time, but I also use a bit of other therapies to meet the needs of my client such as EMDR. I typically work with clients that are adults looking to change their behavior or understand why they react the ways they do. I try to create a safe nonjudgmental environment that feels warm and comfortable so the client may find it easier to talk.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
