My name is Tyson Ortiz, and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who was born and raised on the Big Island. I have spent the last eight years working with victims of sexual abuse, domestic violence and those struggling with addiction. I am in my 20th year of social work and find that the best approach is whatever works best for my client. That can be different for each person. Some benefit from EMDR to eliminate negative cognitions, while others benefit most from having a sounding board to talk through situations. You are the expert on your life, don’t settle until you find the right fit.

I offer complementary treatment modalities, including mindfulness practices, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing ( EMDR), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and hypnotherapy.
I am a licensed mental health counselor and graduate of Columbia University, and have been providing mental health services since 2006. My practice incorporates the client’s input and feedback, which in my experience is essential to achieving insight. I believe that the best therapy does not end with achieving insight, but should extend to helping my clients develop a practical plan for turning insight into action. My job isn’t complete until I have helped my clients foster the resilience and self-reliance necessary for managing daily challenges on their own.

As our lives constantly change, our perspectives about others, life circumstances, as well as ourselves are also changing. On some days, we might feel “on top of the world,” while on others, we might feel anxious, defeated, and/or unloved. When we hear, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” and think that it’s just too hard to do right now, know that being open to a new perspective and change, even at this very moment, is already enough.

I integrate EMDR, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy with a focus on navigating the impacts of trauma, life transitions and healing root causes of depression and anxiety.
I have always been humbled by this profession and the incredible gift of being a guest in someone's journey of self-discovery. Life is filled with many obstacles that often come in some form of pain; emotional, physical, existential, etc. and if we are willing to listen and be in its presence, we will hear it speak gently but clearly of the pieces of ourselves to keep, the pieces to improve and the pieces to let go of. As Ryan Holiday so greatly states "The Obstacle is the Way." If you are looking for someone to walk alongside you as you find your way, I would be honored to meet you.

EMDR Therapists
Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.
Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.
What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.
What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
