What conditions can be helped? ADHD, emotional regulation/mood swings, decreased mental functioning (attention, memory, alertness), stress management, sleep problems, depression, anxiety, autism, tension headaches/migraines, chronic pain/fibromyalgia, mild traumatic brain injury (concussions), posttraumatic stress disorder, etc.
Neurofeedback is a safe, non-invasive brain training method. The essence of neurofeedback is self-regulation, teaching the brain to properly regulate itself. Neurofeedback is essentially a brain workout. It trains your brain to be more flexible and resilient. Without pushing it in any specific direction, the neurofeedback system interacts with your central nervous system in a way that improves neural plasticity. A mind that is more flexible adapts and responds quicker and more appropriately to changes in your environment. The more easily your brain adjusts to changes encountered in a normal busy day, the better you feel.

I have specialized in autism and Asperger's syndrome for 20 years, and my practice is currently limited to individuals who have or are suspected of having an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This can include presenting problems such as anxiety, depression, aggression, compliance issues, which often arise because of difficulties with social communication and inflexible thinking. ASD is often missed in girls and women, because they try harder to fit in, and pretend to be normal. I believe that every person has innate worth and deserves to live in peace.

Do you find yourself stuck in your life- jobs, relationships, or general unhappiness in the way your life is going? Let me help you move forward in life. I was in a similar situation when I was 30 – in an unfulfilling and stressful job. I went back to school, earned my B.A, and earned my M.Ed in counseling & guidance, and Ph.D. in Educational Psychology. It can be confusing to figure out which direction to take in life, or how to overcome life’s obstacles. Let’s work together to understand and resolve your struggles and help you to follow the path you choose to follow.

My name is Feather Tapio, and I am a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) based in Honolulu, Hawaii. I work with clients statewide via telehealth. I have worked with everyone ages 5 to 95, but primarily adolescents in recent years, using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help my clients start their healing process one session at a time. My therapy approach starts with discussing with the client what they wish to get out of therapy and then creating a treatment plan with them in mind.

Therapy can be an opportune place to make sense of one’s external and internal world; to engage in meaningful exploration of self and others. I consider fostering of insight and perspective into various domains, particularly relational ones, to be a valuable part of the therapeutic process. Becoming a partner with oneself, embracing one’s strengths and challenges, is an incredibly empowering and exciting process. In addition to individual therapy, I can work with couples and families as well.

Autism Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?

Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?

Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
