As a counselor certified in thanatology (the study of death, dying, and bereavement), I recognize that the grief process is not just for death-losses.
My grandfather used to tell me: “Write your life in pencil for it will surely change”. While we can be certain that our life and circumstances will change throughout life, what we can rely on is our ability to adapt. I view counseling as an opportunity to help you figure out how to adapt to the curveballs life throws at us. I can help you learn new coping skills, gain a fresh perspective, or provide a listening ear, I believe that you too can adapt. I have experience in areas such as depression, anxiety, adjustment, oncology, chronic illness, and grief and loss.

Time to move through your grief.
Are you feeling stressed, anxious, or depressed? Do you feel each day is a struggle and there is no hope? Do you have anger that is difficult to control? Have you experienced a life-changing event that you need help coping with and understanding? Is your child or teenager struggling with emotional, social, or behavioral difficulties? Are you a concerned parent? People visit counselors for many reasons. For some it is the beginning of breaking free of chains preventing discovery of their true self. For others it means understanding why unhealthy patterns of behavior continue. For all it is an investment in hope and change.

Not accepting new clients
I work with individual adults, especially college students/young adults, those with grief/loss, life transitions, and survivors of abuse/trauma.
Not accepting new clients until fall 2024. The thought of meeting with a therapist can be intimidating, and I pride myself in my clients describing me as being very down to earth and easy to talk with. Most individuals who have never pursued therapy before are pleasantly surprised at how much they enjoy this relationship. I work with Willis (Great Pyrenees/Great Dane) who is an AKC Canine Good Citizen and registered Therapy Dog through Alliance of Therapy Dogs. He is available to be present during appointments if desired.

I work with youth age 6-18 and adults who may be struggling in the following areas: Depression, including Post-Partum Depression, Anxiety-Mood Disorder, Stress management, Family conflict, Parenting skills, Coping skills, Trauma Focused CBT, Grief and Loss, Body Image issues, Student-Athlete Pressure/Balance.
Connection matters; we weren't meant to go through life's hurts and challenges alone. Oftentimes we get this connection through friends and family, but sometimes we need more than that. Sometimes it feels as though we are stuck in the spot we are in without hope of things changing. I understand that it's difficult to take that step towards counseling. My heart is to create a space to feel heard, understood, and to gain hope as we walk through those stuck points together.

As a therapy client myself, I can tell you it takes courage to find a therapist. Life is not neat and tidy. We all need help. Not judgement, not lectures, not hearing people say ‘learn to cope.’ Healing is not a linear journey, it’s a process. I can be your partner in that process. You are the expert of your life! I’m a sounding board to help you find the solutions within! This is the case regardless of whether are dealing with depression, anxiety, communication issues, trauma, or grief.

My clinical specialties include personality disorders, grief and loss, life transitions, adjusting to new situations, and trauma.
My style of therapy includes mindfulness, resilience, and helping clients find the strength that resides in all of us. I can and will be at times very blunt and to the point but I do know that this is your life being discussed not mine. I have an inclusive feminist background and am comfortable working with all genders.

I have experience working with PTSD and trauma, grief, depression, anxiety, ADHD, ODD and behavioral issues.
I believe that we all need a little bit of help once in a while. I also know that sometimes we don't know how to get that help or whom to ask. I feel that therapy can be beneficial to help facilitate that change by providing an outlet or resource for those that need that help.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
