My philosophy: I see my clients as human beings first and not a diagnosis. Personally, I don't like clients define themselves as being "Addicts" or "Alcoholics". They are much more than just a label. One of my first goals is to get clients to understand this and to provide them with dignity and respect. Treatment only focusing on the addiction limits the person. This is why I like to treat the overall client's needs and to meet them where they are in the therapeutic process. Guilt and shame are affecting the whole family and I will work with the family for a beneficial outcome.
I believe that the whole family needs to become aware of how they have willingly or unwillingly participated in this process. It has become a family disease at this point and everyone needs to participate in recovery to help that loved one become comfortable with the recovery process.
