I focus on couples counseling using the Gottman method, and I have completed the Level 3 Practicum Training in Gottman Method Couples therapy.
I love helping adolescents and their families! Sounds strange I know, but it's true. I provide a listening ear and create a non-judgmental space for youth ages 11-24 to talk about life, love, friendship, and the challenges associated with transitioning into adulthood. I also work with struggling adults, couples and stressed families, and help individuals deal with things like depression and anxiety. Life puts lots of pressure on individuals, marriages, parents, and families, and I'd love to help you find ways to cope with the pressure and go from surviving to thriving!

I am able to utilize Gottman Method Therapy when working with couples.
Creating change in your life is hard work and asking for help is even harder when you've tried to do it alone. Having distress in one part of life can create waves in other parts. I believe that therapy can provide you with the tools and confidence to face these changes. Together we can work on those hard moments in life and turn them into opportunities for change and development. Working together to dispel those waves around you can create a more peaceful and fulfilling life.

I am also skilled in assisting couples with communication and attachment issues through the use of Gottman Method Couples therapy and Emotionally Focused therapy.
Adults who have found success with my approach often come to me for help with challenges like people-pleasing, where they put others' needs before their own, and struggling to set boundaries. They may also be dealing with anxiety, body image issues, and navigating major life changes, which can leave them feeling drained and resentful. These individuals are ready to explore new approaches to break unhelpful patterns, and they're looking for a therapist who is easy to relate to and open to ongoing feedback.

Also informed by emotionally focused therapy for couples, and the Gottman Method, I help couples quickly identify small changes that can result in significant improvement in the quality of their communication and relationship.
Being a human being can be quite challenging! There's a saying about the mind: 'the mind is a good servant, but a cruel taskmaster!' Many of us never learned how to calm our minds, limit our worrying, and self-soothe. Mindfulness training is one of the most researched methods for learning to do this. My work with individuals helps them to become skilled in this way, and to lessen the grip of attitudes and beliefs that limit us in significant ways. I work with individuals in this way, as well as with groups.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
