Garrett Wheeler graduated from Saint Mary’s College of California with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology. Influenced by coursework and the humanitarian mission of the institution, Garrett joined the Peace Corps after completing his studies. For two years Garrett served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Baran, Kosovo. There he taught English as a foreign language to middle school students at Deshmoret e Kombit; the local school. Aside from promoting English literacy, Garrett provided opportunities for social engagement. With the aid of other volunteers, Garrett helped organize and lead various summer camps throughout the country.
And in the community of Qallapek, Garrett wrote a grant on behalf of farmers enabling them to begin their own dairy business. Aspiring to continue work in education, Garrett became a National Teaching Fellow for Citizen Schools upon returning to the States.
Affiliated with Americorps, Citizen Schools aims to reduce the opportunity gap by partnering with schools in lowincome communities. Here they provide supplemental curricula and connect youth to working professionals. With Citizen Schools, Garrett worked at Alpha Jose Hernandez and Roots International Academy; two middle schools located in California.
