Welcome! I am a licensed psychologist who provides psychotherapy for individual adults, couples, and adolescents. I have found that one of the most powerful ways to grow is the relationship between the psychotherapist and client. This connection can give way to discovering greater yearnings, self authenticity, capabilities, and dreams, while providing warmth and care for addressing one's obstacles such as fears, disappointments, and limits. I would help you to deal with conflicts that block your motivation and passion and help you open to new ways of engaging with your inner resources and with the significant people in your life.

Life is tough and can sometimes be overwhelming. Working all day and then coming home to your second job as a parent. Your child or teen is arguing with you about homework, grades, and social media! Dealing with child or teen tantrums, while trying to get dinner on the table. Does this sound familiar? What about struggling with body image, managing relationships and emotions, and worrying about societal pressures? Oftentimes we try to hold it all together, but what happens when we can’t. Adults and adolescents frequently are challenged with the same obstacles, called LIFE. One of the greatest gifts we can provide to someone is help!

Today's teens face different types of stressors than those to which we adults were exposed. Our culture, with its social media and overly committed lifestyle of busyness, sets our young people up for increased anxiety, depression, and a lack of genuine understanding of who they are. I am passionate about helping young people live life in wholeness. I see ages nine and up. My areas of specialty are ADHD, anxiety, depression, self-harming behaviors, stress management, school-related issues, and family transitions. I'm trained in EMDR, a therapy technique for those who've experienced trauma.

Client's are always "moving towards" their goals - symptom relief, boundaries, coping, etc. "Change" doesn't have to have a dramatic flair or be immediately noticeable, it just has to be present in a way that makes sense to the person seeking therapy. My goal as a therapist is to help a person figure out what they're moving towards and provide support in reaching that goal.

During our lives, we often experience emotional pain and adversity that leaves us feeling hopeless, powerless, or directionless. We might feel we are broken and need to be ‘fixed’. Therapy provides a path towards understanding ourselves more and increasing skills that can help us feel more able to handle difficult experiences and find growth. It helps us realize that we can find peace in the parts of life we do not like so that the parts that we love can shine. It is about finding acceptance in the uncomfortable times, and in being and becoming more of our unique selves.

Therapy is most valuable when a person feels seen, heard, and understood. I know the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment for that to happen with my clients. I view the success of the counseling encounter as the result of a joint commitment to a collaborative relationship between myself and the client while they are on their journey to growth, healing, and positive change. It is my mission to help bring about that positive change for those I have the privilege to work with.

Teamwork between the client and myself are the best combination for designing a treatment plan that is both workable and promises change. That's how and why I named my practice, Rediscovering Life Counseling Services, LLC.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
