You are smart and resourceful, but your emotional difficulties and insecurities have proven to be more stubborn than other problems you've faced. Despite learning a lot about yourself through self-inquiry, reading, and prior experiences with therapy, you have once again come to the point of feeling stuck. You may feel like you are falling short of your potential. You may be exhausted yet too stressed out to rest. You may be too burnt out to work - almost as if you are broken. You may be experiencing intense feelings without obvious cause. Or maybe your relationship or parenting situation is so high-conflict that you feel hopeless.

Any crisis whether it stems from relationship problems, the after effects of fighting in war, contemplating suicide, sexual/physical assault and the like can be a dark and lonely place to be in. This is especially true considering that sometimes when a person experiences a traumatic event, he/she may find unhealthy ways to cope with feelings that are too overwhelming to deal with. As a result, most people don't seek help until an area of their life has been negatively impacted or they have gotten to a place that they don't want to live anymore.

My counseling experience covers a variety of issues, including sexual abuse, adverse childhood experiences/trauma, depression, anxiety, relationships, communication, suicide/self-harm, spirituality, parenting, self-esteem, anger, and grief.
Life certainly takes unexpected turns! How, then, do we live balanced, authentic lives in the midst of intense stress, loss, and change? My goal is to help you examine, heal, grow, and gain perspective. Like peeling back layers of an onion, therapy provides clients the opportunity to see that many life events are interconnected by family patterns, past trauma, grief and loss, boundary issues, and learned coping strategies, to name a few. Therapy also gives clients opportunities to strategically prepare for the future, explore personal values and spirituality, strengthen relationships, and clarify goals.

Throughout my 25 years as a therapist, I have focused on issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, self harm, suicidal thoughts, and oppositional/defiance. Many of my clients also describe themselves as Neurodivergent. No matter what the issues may be, I find that people often start therapy because they feel stuck and are seeking ways to move forward. We work together to develop concrete goals such as making a new friend or just getting out of bed everyday. Other clients in my practice are searching for a safe place to work through their pain. Whatever your starting place, you are welcome here.

Growing up as a first generation in the United States, mental health is often unspoken as family is from Guyana, South America and we did not have conversations surrounding how we were feeling. I believe that putting more focus to heal ourselves can lead to great results. I did not now know how to do that growing up, which affected my perspective and lack of awareness as an adult. I think about therapy as a healing journey, a way to learn more about yourself and learning new ways to take on challenges. I feel that everyone needs at least one person that can talk to and navigating through life for it should not be done alone.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
