I enjoy seeing adult and teen clients who are working on issues related to eating, mood regulation, anxiety reduction, trauma, and/or self-improvement. I have also worked at an outpatient eating disorder center since 2006. I have an eclectic approach to therapy that incorporates skills like Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), as well as looking at the best fit and goals for the client. I include humor and a deep understanding of people's need to be heard and work on themselves. I enjoy helping to guide someone in their own best path.

I welcome adult and adolescent clients, their families and significant others who are motivated to learn about themselves, improve their relationships and transform their lives. I am fat-positive and use a Health At Every Size (HAES) approach, am welcoming to all gender and sexual identities, races, religions, and cultural backgrounds and am an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community. I work with clients going through a wide range of difficulties including addiction, grief/loss, eating disorders, negative body image and relationship problems.

Hi there! I understand the experiences you’ve had leading up to this decision may have been difficult, and you were able to navigate them the best way possible so far. Reaching out for the help you deserve speaks to your determination to be on a better path! I would be happy to join your support system and be there with you through whatever barriers you may encounter on this journey. These barriers might surface in many different ways: anxiety, depression, struggles with eating, identity crises, social conflicts, trouble focusing, low self-esteem, trauma and/or everyday problems that just don’t seem to let up.

Everything might look OK on the outside. But inside, it feels like you're falling apart. You want to be optimistic and fun. You want to be a good partner, mom, friend, daughter, or sister. But everything seems so hard and you just don't feel like yourself. Perhaps it started with a loss - like a tough breakup or a death. Perhaps you struggle to find peace with your relationship with food and with your body. Maybe you feel like you've struggled your whole life, always feeling different in a world that feels like it wasn't made for your brain. You just want some support from someone who understands.

I conduct individual, couples, and family therapy with adolescents and adults and specialize in treating, mood disorders, anxiety, eating disorders, body image issues and obesity issues, relationship issues, family issues, adolescent issues, GLBTQ issues and diversity issues.
I believe in establishing a collaborative approach with my clients to help support the therapeutic process. Using cognitive-behavioral techniques, I help my clients learn to identify and challenge their unhealthy thoughts and behaviors so they can develop fuller, more meaningful lives. I work with clients in managing their emotions, improve their ability to communicate with others, and build healthy and resilient self-concept. Utilizing a direct, interactive approach, with a touch of humor, I teach my clients coping skills so they can pull from their "toolbox" of skills in between sessions and eventually throughout their lives.

My job is about hope. Many of my former clients tell me that they were surprised and relieved to feel so much better after therapy. They were unsure if they would ever find relief from the challenges they had. That is why I do what I do. It is a joy to share in that journey of healing. I specialize in anxiety, depression, and trauma. I use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help my clients process and move forward from their traumatic experiences. I love using play and expressive arts to engage children and adolescents. I also have a special place in my heart for those who struggle with eating disorders and self harm.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
