The type of therapy I offer is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), where we will explore different ways to regulate emotions, tolerate distressing events, mindfulness, and improving interpersonal relationships.
*Intensively Trained DBT Therapist* Deciding to begin therapy can be an anxiety provoking decision. That is why I provide an ease about coming to therapy and attempt to make my clients feel comfortable beginning this process. I enjoy working with children, adolescents, and adults helping them get through difficult transitions in their lives. I do a lot of work challenging people to explore their aggression, self-harming behaviors, drugs and alcohol use, suicidal ideations, depression and anxiety. I also enjoy working with adults dealing with life transitions and helping them improve their moods and perspectives on life.

Are you nervous, having panic attacks, shortness of breath, or maybe your heart is racing and you can't explain it; it could potentially be anxiety. Maybe for lack of better coping skills you have increased your use of alcohol or drugs. Maybe your family is telling you you are addicted to or abusing alcohol or drugs, but you don't know what else to do. Some people don't understand what is happening to their body and are fearful of where to go or how to get help.

I believe that psychotherapy involves the client's self-exploration and behavioral change, facilitated by the therapist, with the goal of reducing symptoms and enhancing personal effectiveness and growth. I am a licensed psychologist with a private practice. I specialize in treating adults, either individually or as couples, who are experiencing depression, anxiety, or relationship difficulties. I offer long-term or brief interventions, depending on the client's needs. I use an eclectic approach, drawing upon cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and acceptance and commitment therapies.

People seek counseling at those times they are needing help to navigate difficult challenges. Often this involves relationships, or it may be the need for self awareness or dealing with life and the pain it brings us. I provide a safe place, a caring sanctuary, where you can share openly when you are ready. I am an experienced Pastoral Counselor and LMFT . Each person I see is totally unique and a "new book" ready to be read. You become my 'teacher" as you share your life, your relationships, your joy and your pain. I am a very good "student" who strives to help you find clarity, understanding, direction and hope.

I enjoy helping former gifted students or overachievers live a more balanced life. If you struggle with perfectionism or high functioning anxiety to the point of stress, burnout, and/or depression, I can help you learn to love and accept yourself as you are and be okay with making mistakes, finding a better balance, and resisting doing all the things for everyone! I am also passionate about helping adults manage tough life transitions, overcome self-criticism, learn when and how to say ‘no’ (set boundaries) so that you can start saying ‘yes’ to yourself, and work through childhood traumas.

Let me support you by teletherapy/phone sessions during this COVID-19 crisis. Facing challenges around trauma, intimacy, sexuality, gender, and sexual orientation can be the most intimate challenges of our lives, about which we're afraid of being misunderstood and judged. I'll help you using methods specific to your needs, situation, and comfort level (which never involve any nudity, touching, or sexual behavior). I'll help you feel empowered, achieve healing, reclaim intimacy, and improve quality of life. We'll work together, at your pace, in a relaxed, non-judgmental, private setting. My office is a safe, LGBTQ affirming space.

Because it can be difficult to know when to reach out to a therapist, especially when seeking help is discouraged, many of us struggle for a long time on our own. Our painful emotions restrict us, stealing our enjoyment of life, interfering with our work, and disrupting our ability to have genuine, satisfying relationships. Reaching out is a sign of your strength and a demonstration of your hope that, with some help, change is possible. Over the years, I've helped individuals from many backgrounds with challenges such as depression, anxiety, work and relationship problems, grief and loss, immigration, and life transitions.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
