It's the end of another long "day in paradise" at your job. You're burned out, and when you get home, so is your spouse. You get in to a fight, and afterwards you feel angry, like there's something wrong with you, and that you're completely alone. I know what it's like to struggle in life, and feel alone. You sense that something in you is broken, that no one can help, that no one cares. I get it, I want to help, and I will help. I work with adults who are exhausted from doing it on their own, desperate to get unstuck and want to achieve the best version of themselves, but have no clue about how to do it.

Do you feel stuck in life? Do you feel unhealthy and stressed out? My therapy focuses on positive psychology and how to help people find a healthy lifestyle. Using this model, I have developed a type of therapy that focuses on helping people achieve health in mind, body and soul. This work includes finding out what problems exist in a persons life, and working to solve the problems we all face in life (loss/grief, anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction and stress). My hope is that by finding solutions and working out those solutions life will get better.

Atlanta Christian Counseling is a counseling experience that is Spirit led. If you have a child, teenager or family member who is struggling, then please reach out. I work with children as young as five and serve all ages through seniors. I recognize God as the healer, and our responsibility and privilege to participate in this process. Therapy is a practical tool that I have seen God use to facilitate healing and reconciliation. Therapy is hands on incorporating both play and talk therapy.

I am passionate about working with people that are either hesitant to start therapy, or who have had a negative experience working with a therapist in the past. Together, we can build a strong foundation for you to build from so that you can continue your self work throughout your life, both in and out of therapy. My typical clients are looking for a safe space to talk genuinely about themselves and explore the factors that are either aiding or preventing them from improving their self worth, relationships, and perspective.

Welcome to Dr. Mitchell's safe space! I am here to assist you on your journey to self-care through awareness and resilience. While maintaining the person in the environment perspective throughout my career, I supported antiracist policies, ideas, and actions. Most of my clients are facing relational challenges due to areas that are out of balance in their lives. At the present time, I have about 150 clients. I spend much time working with people with high levels of stress, anxiety and depression. My greatest strengths are in Marriage & Family and Youth Counseling due to the fact that I look for root problems in the lives of people and find ways to retrain them so that they can be much more functional. I am also very effective with self-esteem issues. With additional counselors we can address substance abuse, weight management, child custody issues, divorce mediation, etc.

I enjoy working with those clients who recognize that change can happen and is good. I enjoy working with individuals, families, couples and groups. Those who recognize that change depends on them, individually and collectively. I do not cause change but only facilitate the process. As we are all in the process of living and life can sometimes be very difficult, we can learn and change everyday. I can help you become the person you want to be, just as the chrysalis wants and does become a beautiful butterfly.

My name is John and I use a short-term, neuro-informed, person-centered, non-judgmental approach to mental health counseling. I hold to the belief that you are the expert on you, you are unique, not broken, and that you have it within yourself to achieve growth, balance, and inner peace. I offer a place where your concerns are respectfully and empathetically listened to with "unconditional positive regard". My goal is only that you leave resilient, more aware, and grow into the person you desire to become with a newfound ability to cope with life's stressors and process trauma of the past from a holistic perspective.

I truly believe that no matter the circumstance, if you explore your mind, put your goals in writing, speak them out loud, and work for them intentionally and unapologetically, they will manifest.

Men's Issues Therapists

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
