“Nothing changes, if nothing changes. " It may sound silly, simple, or even counterintuitive, but too often, we find ourselves stuck in patterns and cycles that make us feel like we have no control over our lives. However, by embracing small steps of change, it is possible to achieve the lifestyle and well-being you are seeking. I am passionate about working with teenagers and supporting them through a crucial stage of development.

As a child and adolescent therapist, I acknowledge the joys and the challenges we as parents often experience. By working with children and their parents as a family system, there is an increase in the overall efficacy of treatment. Often, many of our struggles as a family stem from our ability to fully understand each others' experiences and view points. Learning to communicate more effectively, regulate emotions, and be more mindful in our every day lives can drastically improve our personal and familial experiences.

You have the impression that no one understands you, or, worse, that no one will listen, no matter how hard you try to explain. You look around, and your circumstances have led you to believe that life couldn't possibly be more, that it was a broken thing far beyond saving. You keep thinking about past disappointments, pain, or loss and decide it's easier to keep everything bottled up inside. Yet, when you interact with your family, friends, and colleagues they appear to be happy, healthy and living their best lives. You want a better life for yourself and believe it is possible, but you’re not sure how to get the ball rolling.

I continue to work in the mental health field because I love seeing my clients’ transformations. I hope to provide a safe space for clients to share their authentic self and unearth their strengths to reach their goals. I believe the client is the expert and as a therapist I am there to walk alongside them. Instead of a “one size fits all” approach, I learn about the client and their history so we can form a treatment plan together. As I’ve grown professionally, I’ve learned that my client’s needs are dynamic, and my approach should adjust accordingly.

Talking to a perfect stranger about personal things doesn't exactly make a person feel warm and fuzzy. Realistically though, life is just hard! Sometimes we just need to share our thoughts with someone who can be trusted not to judge how life's toughest blows may have affected us. Sometimes we just need to be able to talk honestly about things we wouldn't share with just anyone. This doesn't make us broken, it makes us 'Human.'

Self-Harming Therapists
How does therapy for self-harm work?
A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.
Which therapies are best for self-harm?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.
Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?
Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
