Before becoming a therapist, I worked for 15 years as a teacher, tutor and academic coach and prioritized building relationships as the foundation for learning.
All of us have a need for belonging and significance, and sometimes we feel discouraged: by our past, choices we have made or things we have experienced, as well as people we have encountered. I work with clients to figure out what is causing distress, and focus on strengths and resources in a personalized approach to facilitate healing, growth, and the development of new skills. Along the way, what Rudolph Dreikurs called “the courage to be imperfect” can emerge.

My focus is on helping your child understand and express their emotions while providing them with the tools they need to thrive. With a strength-based framework, I strongly believe understanding my clients – their strengths, interests, needs, and learning styles. I'm experienced in assessing attention-deficit/hyperactivity, behavior & emotional functioning, cognitive or academic abilities (including learning disabilities), autism-spectrum, trauma impacts, personality, & parental fitness.
NOTE: DR. JONES ONLY CONDUCTS EVALUATIONS AND IS NO LONGER ACCEPTING THERAPY PATIENTS! Psychological evaluation is often the best FIRST STEP in understanding and improving oneself!! It provides an in-depth view of one's issues and offers specific recommendations in regaining freedom from life's difficulties, overcoming emotional distress, and improving in a variety of environments like school, home, social, work, etc. I am a clinical psychologist, with a great interest and skill in assessing issues that may underlie psychological symptoms and difficulties. As these improve, new potentials and capabilities in life are limitless!

You just want your happy, motivated, carefree kid back! You want them to enjoy school and enjoy learning again without the struggle and drama.
As a parent, there's nothing worse than watching your child struggle. Standing by and watching their grades fall and their anxiety rise is excruciating, but nothing you've tried is making the situation better. Your child doesn't seem to know what's due or when, they are unorganized, have no plan for studying, lack effective study habits and skills, and have trouble disengaging from their phones. Communication is breaking down between you and your child and they seem unmotivated and apathetic toward school. You may also be questioning if your child is just being a typical moody teenager or if it's more serious. Are they depressed?

I have special interests in areas of treatment involving anxiety, depression, attention and learning difficulties, self-esteem and self-exploration, men’s issues, and online gaming and technology addictions.
I thoroughly enjoy working with children, adolescents, young adults, and adults. As a licensed psychologist having worked at different settings and with different age groups, I appreciate the nuance that each person brings to the therapy room. I work collaboratively with clients to figure out the solutions that will best meet each individual’s specific needs. For some, that can mean implementing certain strategies and solutions, while others might require a closer look at one’s identity and close relationships to determine a good path forward. I do my best to ensure that you feel valued, understood, and respected.

Whether it’s learning new strategies as a parent, becoming more present as a partner, or just finding ways to bring your best self to your life, I would love the opportunity to encourage you and guide you as you take those steps.
Bringing about positive change in our lives is often much harder than we would like. During challenging times we need care and support from someone who will also challenge us to reach our goals. Growth is a key aspect of being human and as a therapist, it is my role to walk with my clients and support them as they travel down the path they have chosen.

I also conduct comprehensive psycho-educational evaluations of children and adolescents to assess for possible learning differences, dyslexia, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and social emotional difficulties.
Sometimes making the first phone call can be intimidating, but I listen without judgment or criticism and ensure a welcoming relaxed style that helps to minimize fear and support your goals. In therapy, I help individuals explore the specific actions, thoughts, and feelings that may contribute to repeating patterns that hinder personal growth, and emphasize existing strengths to develop specific workable goals. When appropriate, I believe in including the family system in therapy to improve relationships. I am also willing to consult with school professionals, pediatricians, psychiatrists, and guardians ad litem to improve care.

I combine my lived experience with a bunch of training and ongoing learning in order to support each individual and family based on their specific needs.
Hey! I'm Sam Marion, a Clinical Social Worker with a lifetime of experience as a multiply neurodivergent person. My neurodivergences include being autistic (PDA profile), ADHD, gifted, a reading disability, and a tic. I support individuals and families who are dealing with these same challenges. So many of my first conversations with families are about a young person who is burned out, but often the parents and entire family are burned out too. People are looking for hope and steps to take, and I come alongside a family to do just that.

Children see me for learning difficulties, developmental differences, behavior problems, and the impact of medical issues.
My practice focuses on psychotherapy, neuropsychological assessment, and educational advocacy. Due to COVID, I am offering tele-assessment for those in high risk groups or w/ family members who are. Issues include: learning problems, employment challenges, relationship struggles, life transitions, developmental disorders, medical illnesses, and stress of being a member of a diverse group (LGBT, ethnic minorities, etc.). I see children/adults who may be unconventional, anxious, depressed or do not fit comfortably within their environment. The label “disability” may be applied to them, but “differently abled” is more accurate.

Education and Learning Disabilities Therapists

How effective is treatment for learning disabilities?

When initiated early and tailored to a child’s specific needs, learning disability treatment can be quite effective at helping a child cope with their disability, though its exact efficacy may depend on the severity of symptoms and whether comorbid disorders exist. Less is known about treatment initiated in adulthood, but it is certainly possible that an adult with a learning disability will see some improvement—or at the very least, identify workarounds and accommodations that could make symptoms less burdensome in day-to-day life.

When should someone seek treatment for learning disabilities?

It’s best to seek treatment as early as possible. Because learning disabilities often go unnoticed until a child starts school, or even until they’re a few years along, regular check-ins with teachers and doctors can help parents determine whether children are meeting milestones and keeping up with peers or whether an evaluation for learning disabilities may be warranted. And although earlier is always better, it’s never too late to be evaluated for learning disabilities and to seek treatment.

What happens if learning disabilities are left untreated?

Undiagnosed and untreated learning disabilities can be a source of significant frustration and shame for a child, who may feel that their challenges stem from a lack of intelligence or willpower. Such feelings can trigger low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety, which may push a child toward risky behaviors, including substance use. In adulthood, untreated learning disabilities can interfere with career success, and lingering feelings of self-doubt and shame can negatively affect someone’s mental health.

Are there medications for learning disabilities?

Currently, there are no medications designed to treat specific learning disabilities such as dysgraphia or dyscalculia. However, someone with a learning disability may be prescribed medication for a comorbid condition, such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD, which may have positive downstream effects on their learning disability; for example, a child with both ADHD and dyslexia may find that they’re better able to focus on their reading exercises after being prescribed a stimulant medication.
