Are you feeling stuck in a cycle that feels impossible to get out of? Or maybe you're holding on to hope of becoming your best self, but there's always something getting in the way. Even if you know exactly what these barriers are for you, taking a deeper look at them can be extremely overwhelming or anxiety provoking. If you are a young adult who is ready to let go of the unnecessary weight holding you back, you are certainly not alone and you've come to the right place. I use a predominantly cognitive behavioral approach, which provides plenty of tools and freedom to tailor therapy to your specific needs and preferences.

You wish you could delete those moments from your life somehow. It was those moments that left you struggling the way you are now. You feel yourself holding your breath every day waiting and hoping things will improve with time. Every day is plagued by fear, sadness, helplessness, hopelessness, and brokenness in the aftermath of those traumatic events. You find yourself struggling to get through the day unable to focus or concentrate. You feel lonely, misunderstood, and unheard. You need relief!

Life is full of challenges especially when there is pressure to fit into a one-size-fits-all mold. Many people go through life following a road map that does not feel authentic to them. It takes intentional time to get to know yourself. Much can be discovered when you slow down and become attentive to your emotions. Self-awareness can contribute to greater clarity and calmness when met with personal life changes. There is an added layer of complexity in relational changes. Whether you are getting married or becoming a parent of an emerging adult, changes like these can bring confusion and call for reflection.

Have you been worried about your child, but you feel something is different and you cannot pinpoint what it is? Children may not always have the words to express what is going on in their world. Dr. Garry Landreth, a prominent expert in field of Play Therapy, stated “toys are children’s words and play is their language.” This form of therapy offers an avenue to connect with a child’s inner world. It works to unlock an understanding of how and why they are operating.

Everyone has experiences from the past that are still with them, in the present. Whether it was a difficult breakup, a childhood trauma, or anything else... We live with all of our experiences, and they can shape the way that we feel about ourselves and also how we feel about our life. Over time, these thoughts & feelings can become a burden that may be holding us down; and this can become a repeating cycle. Therapy can help a person re-examine their feelings and experiences with a new lens, while also learning new ways to grow into the person they have always wanted to become. Don't just survive your life... You deserve to THRIVE!

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
