Some of my special interests include working with trauma, anxiety/depression, men and masculinity, grief, and relational/family issues.
People seek therapy because they want change. As a psychologist, I work collaboratively with clients to gain deep personal insights, helping you break free from patterns that are holding you back from greater fulfillment. My goal is to provide a transformative therapeutic experience. I do this by building a trusting relationship where clients feel both supported and challenged to make observable progress in treatment. This process often involves gaining understanding of the causes of your distress, recognizing your strengths, and taking intentional action. Being able to laugh also helps!

I enjoy working with clients 15+ dealing with various mental health issues, including trauma, OCD, grief, and bipolar disorder to find out how they can refocus on what's important and make space for things that are difficult.
Being a human is tough. You may be struggling with feeling empty, disconnected, hopeless, or stuck. Maybe you've noticed that the person you are now appears drastically different from the person you used to be or is just not who you want to be going forward. You want life to be more engaging, fulfilling, and enjoyable. Your thoughts and feelings are valid, as is your desire to want more for yourself. I am humbled to walk with you on your journey to your desired life.

Hi! My name is Sara Brisbois and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I counsel using an integrative and interpersonal approach. I believe everyone has things that come up throughout life that they need help working through. I also believe that a therapeutic relationship alone can be incredibly healing and helpful. By creating that therapeutic relationship, I am then able to personalize therapy to best suit each client and meet them where they are through a variety of approaches.

Individuals that work with me appreciate my compassionate style and my knowledge about trauma and distance counseling.
Why bother telling anyone, they won't believe you or won't care. People would think it was your fault, after all, you did not say "no". There is no way that your physical health issues could be related to what happened to you, after all, it was so long ago and you don't even think about it anymore. It becomes easier to wear a mask then reveal the pain of what you cannot speak about. Being strong all the time becomes harder as the days, weeks, and months go by.

I approach complex trauma and anxiety with a relational mindset and use a mix of talk therapy, EMDR, and yoga counseling (depending on your preferences).
I help highly intelligent over-achievers trade anxiety for confidence without feeling like a failure. My clients struggle like you do. Despite being smart, successful, and funnier than a viral meme, life is hard. When they first come in, they feel trapped by their image. They like being thought of as organized and successful, but inside they feel a total fake. When they stop to think about it, they realize they don't even feel like themselves anymore... it's like they've morphed into what other people expect them to be. Their greatest fear is people seeing the real person behind their mask and rejecting them.

I have a background in treating addiction, trauma, and mental health as well as relationship issues and other types of life change.
So you've been thinking about making a change in your life. Maybe you've even tried taking steps to make it happen, but for some reason, it just isn't working. That's okay! We all need help every once in a while. Maybe it's help finding solutions or maybe it's just someone to listen while you work through the process. Either way, I would be honored to be that person. With 10+ years in the mental health and addiction field, I have learned a thing or two about "change coaching." I have immediate openings for in-person and online sessions. Schedule your free consultation by visiting my website at www.athenstac.org.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
