You don't have to keep wearing that mask or fear being seen as an "angry Black woman" with me.
Does it feel like no one knows what you are really going through inside, because on the outside everything is all put together? Does it feel like you have to perform or wear a mask to make it through the day, because everyone sees you as strong and successful already? Have you spent so much of your life working towards a goal (a degree, a career, a relationship) but now that you’re here it still feels like something is missing? Maybe you're starting to question some of the things you were taught about life and yourself from a young age, and you've grown tired of trying to live up to expectations that you never set for yourself.

I specialize in working with Black women, new moms, Queer, and Gender Non-Conforming Folks who find it difficult to honor their truth.
Is self-compassion a new concept to you? Is it hard for you to set good boundaries? Do you have a difficult relationship with your family? Are you a member of the LGBTQ+ community? If any of these sound like you, then I am glad you're here. Who would you be if you were free to be your truest, most authentic self? What would life look like for you? What would you be able to accomplish? How would you feel?

As a black therapist, I can offer a lived experience perspective to help you work through the extra things you're dealing with that might be impacted by your own identity.
I love to help aspiring people find new meaning of life by sorting through complicated thoughts and feelings instead of avoiding them like an annoying telemarketer. My clients struggle just like you do. Despite being successful, intelligent, and as sweet as a Georgia peach, life is hard. When they first come in, they feel overwhelmed with every aspect of their life. What once seemed like a small hurdle has turned into an Olympic sport to overcome. They can hardly remember feeling motivated and feel like joy has vanished.

As a Multiracial Woman of Color, I have a passion for working with members of marginalized communities, including BIPOC ( Black, Indigenous and People of Color). My method of therapy focuses on a personal approach that works best for each client’s personality and presenting issue. I find it a joy to help others find hope amid their pain and believe that healing happens within the context of relationships. I enjoy unraveling and getting to the root of the presenting issue. I strive to create a warm, authentic, non-judgmental environment that encourages clients to gain awareness of themselves.

If you are looking for a Black woman therapist to serve as a support and guide along your journey to healing, liberation, affirmation, and wellness, then I am the counselor for you.
You’re trying to navigate all of the transitions that come with being a teenager or young adult in the world. Maybe you feel overwhelmed and isolated as you try to do it all on your own. Transitions aren’t easy, whether you’re moving from one career to another, out of relationships that no longer serve you, or from college to graduate school. As hard as it can feel when you’re in the midst of it, these changes offer an opportunity for you to explore where you come from, who you are, and who you want to be.

I created my group practice, To The Root Counseling, to expand services to the BIPOC ( Black, Indigenous, and people of color) community.
So you're feeling stuck? Past traumas are tying you down? Does daily anxiety keep holding you back from joy? You feel trapped when all you really want is to stretch free and bloom. I won't try to "fix" you. Instead, like a gardener, I'll foster a safe environment that encourages your growth and your healing. Together we'll tend to the soil of your life, dig up the weeds that hold you back, and give you the space you need to bloom into the light.

Like you, my clients have been through traumatic things that happen in movies like being raped by their own parent, having it covered up, and being seen as the black sheep of the family; being treated like dirt, bullied by their family, and left alone to fend for themselves; being cheated on and learning decades later the son or daughter they've raised isn't theirs biologically; witnessing the suicide, homicide, or cruel abuse of their loved ones while hiding and holding their breath under the bed or in the closet; and being denied opportunities and otherwise oppressed because of their race or who they choose to love.

As a young, black queer woman who was diagnosed with ADHD at a young age I have had the unique experience of navigating the world and developing whole wellness unique to my needs.
Navigating the world is tough enough, but when you add being Neurodivergent, LGBTQ+, a single parent, a minority, or any number of marginalized identities on top of it the weight can appear unbearable. The effect our individual identities can have on our home life, job, social life, and our very sense of self can make dealing with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting struggles, or engaging in self-care seem like a daunting task. We all strive for whole wellness but that looks different for everybody. The whole wellness you desire is not out of reach.

You're not alone, and more importantly, you don't have to navigate this journey by yourself. You're Here Because You Want More for Yourself You're tired of the disappointment you feel in yourself, the weight of daily tasks that feel like too much, and the sinking feeling that you're not living up to your own expectations, let alone anyone else's. What you need isn't another influencer tadvice that doesn't apply to your unique situation.

We often hear the phrase “In life, there are no guarantees.” However, that’s not completely accurate. One thing that is inevitable in life is that there will be change. Sometimes it is subtle, small in comparison to the grand scheme of the things we are facing. At other times, change hits us with the force of a ton of bricks, stopping us in our tracks and negatively impacting our daily lives. It is at these times that our mental, emotional, and physical health becomes susceptible to life's stressors and where we may suffer a decline in our quality of life. You don't have to face these times alone.

In life we often come to a point where what has been no longer works. We reach a point where we have to make changes for our wellbeing and/or happiness. We reach a crossroad, and must figure out which direction to take. In my work with clients, I aim to help them navigate this process. This includes exploring options that are available or could be forged. It includes exploring the impact of change on existing relationships. It includes making space for all the feelings, both good and difficult, that come with considering something new. It also includes finally attending to past pain/trauma that could be clouding the process now.

Black and African American Therapists

As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?

African American clients may seek out African American therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.

Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?

Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with African American clients?

Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with African American individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of African American clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognizing that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?

The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
