My papa, Leonard Cohen, received his MSW from the University of Pittsburgh and went on to become the Executive Director of Jewish Family and Career Services in Atlanta for many years.
Finding a therapist you feel comfortable with and trust can be very challenging. Painful life experiences, past trauma and current situations can cause you to feel stuck, anxious and depressed. You may have noticed changes in your relationships, work, mood or self-esteem. Feeling understood and supported is of highest importance when navigating through life challenges. As such, I am dedicated to protecting your trust and providing you with emotional safety as you undertake the vulnerable yet enriching journey of therapy.

On a personal note, I'm a queer Jewish nonbinary woman who's big on crafting, reading sci-fi and fantasy, playing Dungeons & Dragons and cozy switch games, and thrifting.
I specialize in child centered play therapy with young children ages 2-7 and person centered counseling for adults 20-40. I help clients navigate anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, neurodivergence, gender and sexual identity exploration, suicide, coping with oppression, and adjusting to life changes. My door is wide open to anyone in the LGBTQIA+ community, neurodivergent folks, and polyamorous individuals/families, or anyone looking to do the brave work of understanding themselves more deeply.

Good therapy works. But often, there are barriers between you and "good therapy"—barriers like finding a therapist that truly fits, the courage it takes to look at your life with honesty, and the effort it takes to grow and change. I'm a Psychologist who works with adults and couples, and I've had the privilege of helping people break through these barriers. I've taught university courses on counseling, worked with a diverse range of clients, and now, as a scientist at a digital health company, I focus on understanding what makes therapy effective. And through it all, one truth remains: good therapy works.

Over the course of my career, I have worked with various populations of teen and adult clients in the mental health field. I can honestly say that I love what I do and have always found a personalized way to connect with each client. I believe it is important to view each person who I meet with an intersectional and unbiased lens and to construct a treatment plan and therapy style for each client that is in line with not just their specific mental health needs, but their personality, sense of humor, and values.

I work with clients who are experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD, or who are going through challenging life transitions. I also specialize in treating perinatal mental health concerns. The clients I work with are typically looking for coping skills that they can use to navigate life's challenges. I use evidence-based treatments that are supported by research, while also working to create a warm and supportive therapy environment. In addition to my work as a therapist, I'm a part-time instructor at Georgia State University, where I teach doctoral students in clinical psychology.

You work hard...like really hard. You're the one who is on the court and in the gym or in the office or the library long after everyone else. It's a lot of pressure that you put on yourself, and you've had great success. But still, you feel anxious, depressed, stressed, unsatisfied, and worn out. Whether it’s your health, your work, your eating habits, your relationships, or your feelings about yourself; life isn’t always smooth or easy. Maybe you've tried to "fix" it yourself, but I'm glad you're reaching out and I'm here to help. We can work together to help you to get through your challenges and achieve your goals.

Unfortunately, we don't always stop feeling like "the weird kid" after we leave high school. Simply trying to change our way of thinking and doing doesn't always beat that nagging feeling of "not-enoughness". Whether that’s a phrase you’ve been told by parents, teachers, bosses, or yourself, it’s almost impossible to grow when you weren’t led to believe in yourself. White-knuckling through everything - jobs, relationships, social situations - it feels like you’re always working the hardest and never getting far enough. Mix in neurodivergence, grief, and only-childness - our anxiety around "being different" is off the charts.

Hello. My name is Judith Ashworth, and I am a licensed clinical social worker. I just retired from the Wellstar hospital system, where I had been working for 20 years, mostly as a behavioral health and clinician. I ran groups and provided assessment and individual brief therapy on their inpatient unit or but within Path, I am looking forward to doing rational emotive behavioral therapy or REBT. This will provide quicker progress. I have been pretty successful working on addiction, depression, and OCD. I feel comfortable working with severe psychiatric disorders as well. But I know that's not what this forum is all about.

If you’re grieving a loss, whether it’s due to death or a non-death loss, you may not feel like yourself right now. You may miss you as much as you miss whom or what you’ve lost… in the foreign post-loss world, hope may seem unreachable. However, it is hope that led you to find me. It can lead you to the change you want. What is your best hope for therapy? How can it be helpful? Call me for a free consultation, and together we can find and create that change and with it, your next authentic best self - even though the world is less than best.

I provide you with a place to speak freely, so that through this unique experience you can become yourself in a new way. I work with individuals, couples and children, with a focus on survivors, trans and queer people, neurodivergent people, and people in recovery. We may strategize together to address crises or life transitions, and we may speak on an existential plane with close attention to the unconscious. In any case, we will raise questions together, we will challenge normativity, and we will prioritize new connection. In our work together nothing is assumed, and in our speaking together new and old things become possible.

I am accepting new clients! Our relationship will be built on finding strengths on which you already have and can build supported change. My skills are suited to clients who have experienced something traumatic, find themselves anxious or depressed, are seeking new purpose or direction in life or find themselves needing support by a neutral and honest voice. My approach is geared toward helping clients understand how thinking can get in the way, and how we can use flexible thinking to help make forward life progress.

Jewish Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same background to be able to work together, but a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond with individuals from a range of backgrounds, as they will have experience tailoring their approach to each client—and will be prepared to acknowledge and consider the effects of cultural forces, such as discrimination, that may contribute to that client’s concerns. With a professional who has such training, a client should feel comfortable discussing sensitive issues without feeling that they need to self-censor.

How can I recognize an effective Jewish therapist?

As with members of any religious or ethnic group, just because two people happen to be Jewish does not guarantee that they will share the same values, knowledge, or experiences. A Jewish client seeking a therapist who shares their cultural identity, or for whom it’s important that a therapist share their religious beliefs, may want to discuss a professional’s Jewish background with them before beginning therapy. For someone who seeks justification for major life changes in their religious tradition, or in biblical writings, finding a therapist who is comfortable framing guidance in that context may be especially valuable.

Would a Jewish therapist have unique training?

No, but they should have the same training and certification as any other mental health professional, as well as experience with a range of evidence-based techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or mindfulness-based therapy. A therapist with this type of experience should be able to help any client feel comfortable and safe, which is essential for a therapeutic alliance. Once this is established, a potential client may want to find out more about the therapist’s Jewish background.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with Jewish clients?

A client can directly ask a therapist if they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and if so, whether these individuals sought counseling for faith-related issues or marital or familial issues in which their Jewish background was a factor. A client may also wish to ask a potential therapist whether they incorporate Jewish teachings and values into their own professional work.

Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Jewish therapists?

The directory of Jewish therapists includes professionals who have opted to share their cultural background on their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their background, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and/or communities.
