I specialize in working with people ages 10 to 100 with anxiety, depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Attention Deficient Disorder, Tourette Syndrome, addiction, and trauma.
Have you found that doing “just” talk therapy isn’t working well for you? Do you find that your life experiences are getting in the way of you enjoying your life and meeting your life goals? I know that the mind and the body are connected and people get well when we look at the whole person, not just their thoughts and feelings. I use mind/body/spirit work to help people find their balance in life. I enjoy using talk therapy, CBT, Brainspotting, Tapping and other therapies that integrate over-all physical health with mental health. I offer a free fifteen minute consult so you and I can chat and see if I am a good fit for you.

Life presents us with many challenges, and it is easy to feel bogged down or stuck in our negative patterns. I am committed to supporting adolescents and adults as they navigate depression, anxiety, trauma, or life transitions. I have seen firsthand how hope and self compassion can propel each individual towards deep healing. Sometimes, words just aren’t enough, so I use a variety of interventions, such as art, psychodrama techniques, sandtray, and writing. Together, we will discover what works for you, and I will support you with warmth and acceptance as you work towards your vision for yourself.

Anxiety and depression can cloud our judgment, closing us off from ourselves and others. Perhaps you have achieved your goals, yet still struggle with feeling “not good enough.” You may feel paralyzed, unable to move forward, continually engaged in self-destructive patterns of thoughts and behavior. What would it be like to quiet those anxious thoughts, experience lasting and genuine peace, and make positive change? Together we can increase your self-understanding, build resiliency, find meaning, navigate challenges, and facilitate joy and growth. My approach is genuine, down-to-earth, warm, insightful, playful, and compassionate.

Hello. My name is Judith Ashworth, and I am a licensed clinical social worker. I just retired from the Wellstar hospital system, where I had been working for 20 years, mostly as a behavioral health and clinician. I ran groups and provided assessment and individual brief therapy on their inpatient unit or but within Path, I am looking forward to doing rational emotive behavioral therapy or REBT. This will provide quicker progress. I have been pretty successful working on addiction, depression, and OCD. I feel comfortable working with severe psychiatric disorders as well. But I know that's not what this forum is all about.

Do you find yourself feeling misunderstood? Wondering why you have a difficult time trusting others, or why relationships never seem to work out? Maybe you have been really hurt in the past, and it's now hard to feel safe? Maybe you catch yourself responding in ways that seem to just make situations worse? It's frustrating. It's exhausting. And we all know it's way easier to avoid these situations but THEN you're lonely and depressed. Therapy isn't just about finding "the right answer" or changing everything you do. Instead, it's about collaborating to find better solutions for living a more authentic life.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
