I believe that you are the expert on your story and that you have many strengths to improve and/or overcome life's challenges. My focus is to identify the barriers that are in your way of becoming your best self. Sometimes those barriers are our unhelpful thinking patterns which become a habit over time. I will work with you to rewrite those old scripts that are not serving you with true accounts of your ability and life. In 2002, I graduated from Marshall University Graduate College with a Master's Degree in Counseling. Now as a licensed professional counselor (LPC), I bring over 20 years of professional work experience.

Listen, after over 20 years of working as a professional counselor, I have learned that the ONLY way to truly treat emotional health is to treat your WHOLE HEALTH. Have you ever wondered why people feel the need to categorize "health" into so many different areas...mental health, physical health, emotional health, spiritual health? In truth, it's all the same thing. Our minds, bodies, and spirits are connected. There's no way around it. If there's any part of you out of balance, your whole self is going to be out of balance. I can teach you about food as medicine, vitamins, minerals, and herbs for total health restoratoration.

For more than 30 years, I have worked with individuals who have struggled with depression, anxiety, chronic illness, phobias, obsessive thoughts, PTSD, and other debilitating conditions. Many have come to me discouraged and disheartened after years of talk therapy, medication, and other interventions that failed to uncover the source of their symptoms and allay their suffering. What I have learned from my own experiences, training, and clinical practice is that the answer may not be within our own story as much as in the stories of our parents, grandparents and even our great grandparents.

Deciding to do therapy can be scary. Will my therapist judge me? Will my therapist understand me? Will my therapist be able to help me? These are all normal questions to ask when trying to decide whether or not to make the commitment. Therapy is a journey that you invite me to take with you and I feel privileged to be a part of this process.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
