Hey there! Welcome! My name is Nisa Seals and I am a dedicated mental health therapist passionate about helping young individuals and families navigate their unique challenges! I was born in Okinawa, Japan, and lived there for a few years before I spent the rest of my childhood and early adult years in a desert town called Twentynine Palms in California. I love dancing, music, food, traveling, anime, and learning about art, history, mental health, and psychology.

As an openly gay, transgender therapist I offer a unique, lived perspective to my clients who are part of the LGBTQIA+. My greatest passion is to help those struggling to make the transition from survival to "thrival". Whether that's through providing therapy for depression, anxiety, ADD/ADHD, trauma, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or offering support for other experiences such as life transitions, grief/loss, LGBTQIA+ related issues, compassion fatigue, burnout, or any of life's other ups and downs. I am licensed in Georgia and have worked for a Community Mental Health facility for over 7 years.

Going through life existing but not living, screaming on the inside but displaying a different image on the outside can feel overwhelming. At times, you've felt extremely fragile; as if the pressure of one more thing could break you into a million pieces. Over the years, I've worked with clients who have struggled; going through the motions and taking every opportunity to numb out their feelings for a moment of peace. It's not easy being different and it's definitely not easy using your voice. It actually may feel very lonely, conflicting, and heavy at times. There's no path forward unless you truly know who you are.

Before I tell you about how I practice, let me tell you that I am happy you are seeking help. This first step is not always easy, but it can be life changing. Change is normal and at times expected, but it can also cause stress and wreak havoc in our lives, disrupting it. Sometimes the change is traumatic and unexpected and can cause our moods to shift, or behavior to change. Therapy can help when the changes that occur in your life that affect your everyday life. Are you seeking help for your child,

My counseling style has always been focused on building a strong therapeutic alliance with my client. I believe in treating anyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion. My motto is that we all have bad situations in life (death, abuse, divorce, etc.) that we experience in life that can trigger some negative thoughts, emotional feelings, etc., and it is important to respond to these situations in a healthy manner or we tend to stay in that negative space longer than we ever intended. My approach combines cognitive-behavioral therapy, DBT, rational-emotive counseling, and client-centered therapy.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
