I believe that depression, anxiety, and feelings of perfectionism, self-criticism, and people-pleasing are all signs of past trauma that may be lingering.
Trauma doesn’t have to hold you captive. You can get free from childhood trauma and trauma from traumatic and stressful life experiences. I have special experience working with professional women who have experienced narcissistic abuse and unhealthy relationships. I also love working with clients who have a desire to move up in their careers and make major life changes. I believe every person should have a life filled with joy and purpose. My ultimate goal is for you to be able to heal, create, and enjoy your life.

My name is Michael Charnley and I am licensed in the state of Georgia, LPC010672. Of course, over 26 years I have become quite eclectic in the therapies I use, but mostly I want to meet the client where they are. Let the session feel like a conversation between 2 acquaintances. Since worked in various agencies when I started I was able to experience a lot of different issues, Depression, Anxiety, Anger Management, Self-Esteem Issues, and since my clients were adolescents, Family Issues. I am also comfortable working with dual diagnosis issues attached to Addiction and Abuse issues.

My experience includes working with individuals in therapy addressing relationship concerns, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and assertiveness skills.
I am a clinical social worker who provides individual therapy for adults. As a therapist my role is to provide a non-judgmental, safe environment for individuals to explore their life issues and support them in their personal growth. I find that a lot of us struggle with listening to our inner critic and often beat ourselves up for past regrets, as well as spending a lot of valuable time worrying about the past and the "what if's" in the future. I hope we can work together to quiet this critic and find a way to enjoy the present. (Please note that I also provide ESA letters for individuals for housing purposes).

Having someone to walk alongside you in your journey to psychological/emotional health can move you from surviving into thriving. Navigating life can be stressful, overwhelming, and at times painful. Dealing with difficulties like life transitions, stress, managing depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, or making seemingly impossibly difficult decisions, all the while trying to maintaining positive self-esteem and finding helpful ways to cope with life demands, is a really hard thing to do. Feeling close to the people we love can feel hard when we struggle to find the ability to be vulnerable in a tough world.

Accepting new clients now. Life can be challenging, from finishing college, to simply handling adulthood, and navigating big changes in life, to realizing you’re not where you thought you’d be by now. Maybe you are not loving work or your relationships are failing. I have worked with people who have turned to alcohol, drugs, food, or self-injury to cope with these kinds of things. Others have shut down in the form of depression or paralyzing anxiety. When these ways of handling life’s stressors are not effective, there is help. I am so proud of you for taking the first steps and prioritizing your mental health.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
