While the journey to self-discovery may be a life long process, we can utilize the power that comes from knowledge of self, our relationships, and experiences, to make the best choices for our authentic selves. This can also bring awareness to what parts of ourselves need nurturance, acceptance, and healing. My goal in counseling is to create a safe space where clients can explore themselves with curiosity and support. I have a passion for providing affirming counseling for BIPOC, Neurodiverse, and LGBTQIA+ populations. I work with teens, adults, relationships, sex therapy, and the complexities of the human experience.

So many therapists to choose from! It's overwhelming, right? What should you look for in picking a therapist? Someone who is enough like you that you can connect, and yet different enough that you can grow. It's hard to tell that from profiles, but you'll make the right decision. It takes guts to be in psychotherapy, because psychotherapy is about really looking at yourself, and seeing what you do well and what needs to be changed. It's about gradually coming to trust the relationship we build together, and using that relationship for safety, support, and feedback.

You are not alone. I see you. I hear you. And, yes, I understand. A wise person once said, “Sometimes you have to lose your mind to gain peace of mind.” What if, on your journey back to peace, sanity, and being you again, you had a personal somebody who was intentional about seeing, hearing, and understanding you, the realist version of you? In our counseling relationship, I commit to being a passenger on your life journey to peace and healing, guiding and supporting you along the way. Let's take a road trip discussing in detail all the experiences and moments that contributed to the good and the bad that make you you.

Researching therapists can be a daunting task, especially when you're used to tackling life's challenges on your own. Lately, something has shifted. Anxiety has you feeling emotionally drained and overwhelmed. It's time to acknowledge that seeking support for yourself is not only acceptable but necessary. You deserve the time and quiet that therapy provides.

My counseling experience covers a variety of issues, including sexual abuse, adverse childhood experiences/trauma, depression, anxiety, relationships, communication, suicide/self-harm, spirituality, parenting, self-esteem, anger, and grief.
Life certainly takes unexpected turns! How, then, do we live balanced, authentic lives in the midst of intense stress, loss, and change? My goal is to help you examine, heal, grow, and gain perspective. Like peeling back layers of an onion, therapy provides clients the opportunity to see that many life events are interconnected by family patterns, past trauma, grief and loss, boundary issues, and learned coping strategies, to name a few. Therapy also gives clients opportunities to strategically prepare for the future, explore personal values and spirituality, strengthen relationships, and clarify goals.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
