My work is grounded in a Client-Centered, Strength-Based model of counseling, using a holistic set of techniques to fit each individual.
Life is consistently challenging all of us in a variety of ways. Whether the difficulties involve a major loss or transition, or conflicts with spouses, partners, children or work, everyone occasionally needs help to sort through our experiences and ensure we progress down a healthy path. I believe that all of us are individuals with our own distinct, and sometimes complex, circumstances. I pride myself in creating a supportive, nonjudgmental space that allows clients to freely, and confidentially explore their struggles.

Maybe feeling like the walls are closing in on you, or perhaps you are having intrusive thoughts or uncontrollable emotional/angry outbursts. These feelings can be terrifying and interfere with your daily life functioning. I don't want you to have to suffer from these feelings anymore. I can give you the tools you need to take your life back.

Resiliency...this is the most powerful quality of the human spirit. I work with clients to help them realize and expand upon this quality. I have been in the mental health field since 1998. My career has given me the opportunity to work with children, adolescents, and adults in every imaginable setting (e.g., private practice, clinics, inpatient, outpatient, outdoor therapy, HIV/AIDS, incarceration, foster care, addiction). My education, clients, and experiences have given me a wealth of understanding that I am thankful to be able to bring into my private practice.

I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who enjoys working with families of teenagers. I also work with individuals and greatly appreciate the opportunity to help others. Before becoming a therapist, I was an educator for 11 years and specialized in prenatal through age 5. I typically work with teenagers and anxiety. I also provide group, couples, and family counseling. Although I do not have any specialization certificates, I like to work with grief and trauma (mostly sexual trauma).

I know that therapy can be intimidating, but that should not be a barrier to finding the help and support you need. A strong alliance is foundational for therapeutic success, and I accomplish this by offering a non-judgmental, safe space where that intimidation is stripped away. I empathize with those who have stumbled off course due to the pitfalls of life. I desire to journey with those individuals and ultimately lead them toward hope and healing. I am passionate about giving others a voice and the courage to tell their story.

Like you, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Tawanda Scales has seen the demise of promising careers, businesses, families, and relationships due to basic “people problems”. Finding an inclusive, affirming, and radical therapist in the South can be disheartening. I am here to help marginalized/minority people and their relations to navigate the challenges our society places on them. As a mixed-Indigenous, queer, cisgender woman, I welcome adult clients who are exploring their multi-layered identity, navigating difficult family/community dynamics, searching for chosen family, and healing from past/current trauma. I warmly invite neurodiverse folks who want to empower themselves and learn more about their inherent strengths. I am kink and poly/nonmonogamy affirming too! All are welcome here.

Strength-Based Therapists

How does strength-based therapy work?

During strength-based therapy sessions, the therapist will ask about an individual’s experiences of stress, pain, or trauma with the goal of orienting the client to view themselves as a survivor rather than a victim, and focusing on their strengths rather than on their weaknesses. In framing a client’s personal narrative along these lines, the therapist and client work together to identify existing skills that can be harnessed.

Is strength-based therapy evidence-based?

Strength-based therapy is an evidence-based treatment that has been studied extensively and shown to be effective across domains. The treatment has been found to be particularly effective in helping individuals who are experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health concerns. Strength-based therapy has been used by therapists to help clients for more than 60 years.

How long does strength-based therapy last?

There’s no precise timeline for strength-based therapy. The duration of treatment depends on the individual’s specific needs and goals and the severity of their concerns. Some individuals may find they achieve their therapeutic goals quickly, while others might benefit from ongoing support and guidance in order to continue progressing.

How effective is strength-based therapy?

Clinical research and decades of practice have shown strength-based therapy to be an effective treatment to improve mental health and well-being for many conditions. The treatment can engender a sense of connection and collaboration between the therapist and the individual, fostering a positive therapeutic relationship. For individuals with narcissistic tendencies, strength-based therapy may be less effective, as the focus on the individual’s strengths may undermine the work needed to honestly assess the challenges the individual faces.
