I work with many different presenting concerns including anxiety disorders, identity development, relationship issues, anger management, addiction recovery support, life transitions, grief, trauma, multicultural issues, and concerns about sexuality.
My areas of clinical focus are around men's issues and with members of the LGBTQ community. I'm committed to providing a safe and affirming environment where you can process your feelings, no matter how difficult or uncomfortable. I'm not the kind of psychologist who sits silently and nods while you do all the work. I'm an active therapist and work collaboratively to help you increase self-awareness and identify a healthier path. Additionally, I draw on different theoretical approaches to adapt my work to your needs, but work primarily from a relational psychodynamic perspective.

I am a multicultural, compassionate and non-judgmental licensed professional counselor. My work includes a client-centered approach as I realize no two individuals are alike. I work with families, couples and individuals. I help clients take stock of what is working and what can benefit from additional attention. I encourage clients to avoid self-defeating beliefs and escape criticism, blame and complaints that distort their mental and emotional wellbeing. As a trained EMDR therapist, I utilize my skill to support clients in identifying and addressing childhood and adult traumatic experiences.

As a Black woman, I lean on multicultural feminist theory and Black Feminist Thought as theoretical lenses to work with clients in therapy and as a scholar/researcher.
At Open Arms we work with individuals who are struggling to manage the stress and burdens of this world. For people of color it is not easy operating in a male dominated, Euro centric society. Fortunately, you don't have to do it alone. We are here to help you learn tools that alleviate your stress, overcome past trauma, or achieve whatever goals you desire.

I am a highly skilled Licensed Clinical Psychologist with specialized training in multicultural psychology, trauma, and women's issues.
I am a relational psychotherapist, which means that I believe relationships (with family, friends, coworkers, higher powers, our relationship with our self, etc.) often play a role in our suffering and, yet, also play a crucial role in our healing. Relatedly, the relationship between the therapist and client is of utmost importance and requires trust and authenticity for both parties involved. In my work with clients, I use a variety of individualized, eclectic approaches to help each person meet their goals and needs. My therapeutic style is warm, direct, empowering, and collaborative.

I love working with clients who are facing divorce, custody, or other family law issues. As a family lawyer turned therapist, I bring a keen understanding of the legal system to my clinical work with individuals & couples. However, not all of my clients are getting divorced! I also enjoy working with couples who wish to improve their relationships as well as individuals seeking to grow. Many of my clients are lawyers or other professionals who value my ability to analyze issues strategically and understand the challenges of a demanding profession. Drawing from cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, motivational interviewing, & multicultural counseling traditions, I collaborate with clients to explore their concerns, set goals, & develop a plan for moving forward. My warm, empathic presence combined with my solution-focused approach allows me to provide non-judgmental support as clients tackle life's challenges.

I draw upon my international work experience, multicultural competency and zeal towards assisting my clients as pillars of strength.
On our journey of life, sometimes we reach a point where it seems as if, we have hit the end of the road. Thoughts like, "I feel stuck", “Life is so meaningless” or “Will my relationships ever improve?”, can leave us feeling overwhelmed and drained. A deep sense of sadness, anger and frustration can get in way of our everyday functioning.  Therapy can assist you through such difficult times, as well as help you overcome every day obstacles. Together we can work towards building healthy relationships and positive well-being. Through our collaboration you will learn to access and engage your inner strengths to combat these struggles.

Aside from my academic training, my psychotherapy approach is also informed by my own queer identity, my multicultural immigrant background, existential worldview, social justice, and the realities of people of working class and low socio-economic experiences.
As a psychotherapist, I create a safe space whereby building a relationship, unraveling issues, demystifying oneself, voicing hopes and dreams, and developing wisdom and insight, one can emerge from (and exist in) the forest that is life with a deeper understanding of how to navigate one's mind and the world around us. It is my philosophy that great psychotherapy not only addresses the issues on the table, but also guides one towards greater overall life fulfillment. I have extensive experience is CBT, ACT, psychodynamic and mindfulness approaches working with a variety of populations, mental barriers and social challenges.

I enjoy working with children, adolescents, young professionals, and adults experiencing interpersonal intricacies, life transitions, executive functioning difficulties, self-esteem and self-image issues, and multicultural identity exploration.
It takes courage and self-compassion to embrace vulnerability. As a therapist working with children, adolescents, and young adults, I strive to create a haven of unconditional positive regard that welcomes and values the whole person. My therapeutic approach is rooted in person-centered and attachment-based theories. I believe that healing, growth, and change are possible for everyone, both from within ourselves and through experiencing a genuine sense of belonging. Through connection, my hope is to invite and encourage a space for us to explore in depth the underlying challenges that may be causing current pain and stress.

Multicultural Therapists

What type of therapy is multicultural therapy?

Multicultural therapy is not tied to any specific therapy; rather, it is an overarching approach to therapy that aims to acknowledge and address the influence that factors like race, gender identity, and cultural background can have on someone’s life. Multicultural approaches can be applied to CBT, psychodynamic therapy, and others, and can be practiced with individuals, couples, families, or groups.

What can I expect from multicultural therapy?

Multicultural counseling should be tailored to the client’s unique identity and cultural needs. Such approaches often prioritize the building of trust so that the client feels comfortable exploring various aspects of their identity and any challenges caused by mismatches between their identity and the dominant culture. Beyond that, the format and timeline of therapy will be heavily influenced by the therapist’s preferred therapy approach and the specific problems for which the client sought therapy.

Can multicultural therapy help treat trauma?

Yes. Cultural factors such as racial background, gender identity and or sexuality, and immigration or refugee status can influence both whether someone experiences trauma and how they cope afterward. Multicultural approaches to trauma-informed care will be aware of these influences, helping the client recognize how their response to trauma may be shaped by their cultural background and identify coping mechanisms that take their identity into account.

What are the benefits of seeing a multicultural therapist?

Members of minority groups who seek therapy are sometimes frustrated by providers who don’t understand their cultural background or dismiss the ways in which race, gender, or other facets of their identity influence their lived experience. Seeing a multicultural therapist can help these clients feel seen, understood, and able to develop solutions to life challenges that take their upbringing, beliefs, and past experiences into account.
