I have been trained in the most researched forms of couples therapy that have proven outcomes; I completed all three levels of Gottman Method Couples therapy, as well as level 1 of TEAM-CBT, Certified Prepare and Enrich Facilitator and Emotionally Focused Therapy, and the CBCT (Cognitively-Based Compassion Training) approach.
Most couples who consider therapy feel stuck in a destructive cycle that becomes exhausting, isolating, and lonely. We all feel lost at times and do not know how to stop hurting. We all share a common experience at some point in our lives: when our relationships become brittle. Thankfully, we now live in a time where there is an answer based on solid research-based approaches. You don’t have to keep guessing how to make it better.

I use concepts from the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Relational Life Therapy to help couples create a healthy partnership.
Did you grow up under abusive, narcissistic, or emotionally immature parents? You couldn't get along with them and their marriage or relationship was dysfunctional and unhealthy. You're afraid of repeating the same fights and hurtful behavior in your own intimate relationship. You're scared your partner doesn't "get" you and that s/he won't accept or leave you. Maybe you have a hard time understanding yourself and knowing why you treat your partner the way you do. If your parents were abusive, narcissistic, or emotionally immature, you don't have a model of what a healthy relationship looks like and you fear you'll end up like them.

I am also trained in the Gottman Method (Level 2).
I’ve always been an "old soul” and felt drawn to finding deeper meaning in a chaotic world. I’m deeply interested in others’ stories and understanding how we grow, heal and thrive. I primarily work with individuals and couples who have experienced trauma, loss, anxiety, OCD, depression, relationship issues and career issues. I’ve often found myself in awe at how the human spirit can weather even the greatest of storms. When I’m not seeing clients, you’ll find me spending time with my family, playing tennis or golf and enjoying the outdoors.

The majority of my work is done from a trauma-informed approach utilizing interventions from the Gottman method, emotion-focused therapy, and narrative therapy.
Many of the clients I work with are striving to cultivate better relationships with the people around them or with themselves. Whether you are in a relationship (dating, engaged, or married) or you are attempting to engage in a more meaningful way with yourself, friends, family, or coworkers, my passion is helping you achieve these relational goals. I work with couples to help get you out of negative communication and conflict resolution cycles and into deeper knowledge of yourself and each other. I also work with individuals struggling with perfectionism, codependency, and complicated family of origin dynamics.

I also work with couples who struggle in their relationships by using the Gottman method.
You feel the pressure to be flawless...with people, work, appearance, etc. Whether you are stressed out over your relationships or being overly critical of yourself when you make a mistake, it is time to make a change. At this point, it's hard to remember a time you didn’t feel like this. But one thing is for sure: you are ready for some relief. Can you imagine eating out without panicking? Or living your life not worried about what others think? Having a conversation with your partner without blowing up? You are ready to find joy in the day-to-day again. Most of all, you are ready to embrace a fresh start, and I am here to help.

I am trained in the Gottman Method, an evidence based approach that is highly effective in improving communication, intimacy, and trust.
Are you experiencing communication problems between you and your spouse? Have you guys been experiencing conflict over financial issues, sexual difficulties, lack of intimacy, and or differences in parenting styles? The top five common issues that bring couples into therapy are communication problems, conflicts over finances, sexual difficulties, lack of intimacy, and differences in parenting styles. These issues can create tension and strain in a relationship and may require the assistance of a therapist to help you and your partner work through them.

I also have additional training with the Gottman Method, Tara Brach PhD and Brene Brown Phd.
Choosing to engage in a therapeutic relationship will help to enhance understanding of self, others and your environment. I believe that everyone possesses the ability and knowledge to create a fulfilling and peaceful life. Sometimes people need a safe place and a non-judgmental guide to help them understand their thoughts and feelings so they can heal and move forward in life. I work best with clients that are collaborative and engaged in the process of understanding and healing.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
