I practice from a multicultural, feminist, antiracist lens and can provide a safe space for people of color or of other marginalized backgrounds to develop and strengthen their identities and to process their experiences of discrimination.
Welcome to my page! My work is founded on our relationship and creating a space of authenticity and comfort. I cherish being let in to someone’s world and I focus on how I can understand your particular context no matter how different we are. I am very warm, personable, engaged and direct without being directive. I will meet you wherever you are and I am flexible in my approach. I help people with relationship concerns, life transitions, experiencing new, uncomfortable symptoms/diagnoses, or sorting through years of accumulated, old stressors. I can help to deepen your understanding and acceptance of yourself and your relationships.

My practice is feminist, anti-oppressive, sex-positive, and trauma-informed.
Accepting new clients. I believe therapy is a collaborative process between the two of us. Our work together will help you live a meaningful and purposeful life, feel safe in your body, understand your behavioral and attachment patterns, and heal from relational trauma. Our earliest relationships inform the way we respond to situations past and present. As adults, we may notice some of these patterns are more harmful than helpful. Through this framework, I incorporate acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), Brainspotting, internal family systems (IFS), and mindful body-based approaches into our work together.

As a Black woman, I lean on multicultural feminist theory and Black Feminist Thought as theoretical lenses to work with clients in therapy and as a scholar/researcher.
At Open Arms we work with individuals who are struggling to manage the stress and burdens of this world. For people of color it is not easy operating in a male dominated, Euro centric society. Fortunately, you don't have to do it alone. We are here to help you learn tools that alleviate your stress, overcome past trauma, or achieve whatever goals you desire.

Special interest areas include: psychotherapy with men, feminist issues, couples therapy, and moral dilemmas.
You need a place to be yourself, where the underbelly and blemishes are welcome without shame or judgment. You work hard, try your best, and still struggle to understand why your life or relationships are not what you thought they would be. You want to feel comfortable and safe with another person who will be supportive and challenge you to take a deeper look inside and make changes that you and others will notice. You will be amazed at how your life makes sense when your emotional and behavioral patterns become conscious.

Though I work with a wide range of clients and a variety of presenting issues, I am particularly drawn to creatives struggling with anxiety and depression. I practice with a feminist focus, striving for equality, advocacy, and equity between all clients and their relationships. I offer feminist psychotherapy with a person-centered, evidence-based approach.
Working through trauma requires tremendous courage. No one wants to find themselves having to focus on healing the past, but once you realize that’s what you need to move forward, there’s no looking back. Whether you are dealing with triggers, flashbacks, nightmares, relationship issues, anxiety, chronic health problems, or simply struggling to stop thinking about unpleasant events from the past, trauma can affect us all differently. I have the experience and training to support you as you shift the patterns you have developed in response to adversity.

I'm a Multicultural Feminist who believes we are more than the sum of our parts.
Experience tells me that most people who seek counseling feel unable to make changes in their life that could bring them greater happiness. I consider it my responsibility and a privilege to facilitate your journey of self-empowerment to make these desired changes. Together we will explore how current patterns of feeling, thinking and acting could be altered by increasing mindfulness and self-compassion. While most of our focus is on the present and future, I also seek to honor your past by exploring how unresolved feelings may be hindering your growth and ability to meet personal goals.

I work from a person-centered, feminist/multicultural perspective and draws from cognitive behavioral techniques.
You need an ally. Someone that is invested in your life and wants to be a partner that can support you along your journey. As a therapist, I strive to be that ally. I believe that it is my job to meet you exactly where you are and help you move toward where you would like to be. Empowerment is imperative to my therapeutic approach, as I believe it serves as a foundation to processing complex topics such as emotional regulation, cognitive distortions, or relationship conflicts.

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
