Everyone else thinks you've got it all together, but inside you feel like you have to play a role to fit into your own life. You have to be perfect, maybe rehearse what you'll say ahead of time, and then tell yourself that no one cares about you since they can't get close enough to know the real you. You know how to appear confident, but deep inside, there is this voice telling you that no one sees you. You crave the feelings of safety and being fully known. You want to feel connected to the people you love. Instead, you feel desperate to maintain control and feel stuck in painful relationships.

My approach to psychotherapy is integrative, drawing from many sources particularly psychodynamic and relational principles. As a psychotherapist, my goal is to be present with you, providing a safe space to explore what emerges during the therapy sessions.

Every person has so much beauty within them that is just waiting to emerge. As a warm-hearted, holistic therapist, I help you navigate through what you want to change. Together, we uncover a path towards wholeness, authenticity and empowerment. I collaborate with adults and teens by providing tools in session that can be applied outside the therapy space. Utilizing deep listening and experiential activities in therapy, we begin to notice changes at both the emotional and relational level. I work with those who experience anxiety, depression, spiritual/existential issues, relationship conflicts, trauma, or those longing to grow.

I work with many people who feel overwhelmed by stress, have lost sense of meaning in their lives, or feel out of control. They repeat the same life patterns again and again. Clients may have focused on the opinions of others more than their own, entered relationships/jobs they never realized they never wanted, or feel generally unfulfilled. My clients want to learn how to be happy again or for the first time. My therapeutic style builds on client self-acceptance, empowerment, and coping skills. We work together to help gain control over decisions, values, and communication styles.

You are feeling trapped. Stuck in a seemingly endless loop of unwanted thoughts, fears, or painful memories. You feel like the only way to get relief is to avoid what hurts or do something…anything to quiet the thoughts. Your symptoms have made your life smaller and smaller until you don't even recognize who you are or who you were meant to be. You only see your symptoms. OCD, anxiety, depression, substance use, and/or trauma make you feel like you are on an island alone.

People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don’t find myself saying, “soften the orange a bit on the right-hand corner. I don’t try and control a sunset.” I watch with awe as it unfolds (Rogers, 1980). In my therapeutic work over the past 15 years I have been uniquely fortunate to watch as potential and destiny unfolds for clients. In my clinical roles I fully espouse a person-centered strength-based focus and approach with clients, to the end of collaborative problem solving with your concerns and goals at the heart of our work together.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
