Hi! I'm Kristy and I can help! For over two decades, I have been helping trauma survivors feel calm in the aftermath of childhood abuse and sexual assault.
You wish you could delete those moments from your life somehow. It was those moments that left you struggling the way you are now. You feel yourself holding your breath every day waiting and hoping things will improve with time. Every day is plagued by fear, sadness, helplessness, hopelessness, and brokenness in the aftermath of those traumatic events. You find yourself struggling to get through the day unable to focus or concentrate. You feel lonely, misunderstood, and unheard. You need relief!

20 years experience has allowed me to specialize in working with sexual abuse survivors, adolescents finding their unique path in life, individual & family systems, co-parenting sessions, Guardian ad Litem, and therapeutic interventions helping individuals find out 'who they are' and their most productive mode of function .
At some time in our life we all struggle with some sort of adversity. I believe we are not judged by adversity but how we handle it. Asking for help is not always easy but it is a sign of strength. Therapy is a process of self discovery that enables you to recognize unhealthy patterns of behavior and learn effective coping strategies for optimal health and well-being. Life happens to each of us and much of life is out of our control - but how we respond to life's events is completely within our control.

I have extensive training and experience in the fields of domestic violence, sexual assault, and substance abuse.
Ever feel like being human isn’t always enough? Like you’re supposed to have superpowers that haven’t “kicked in” yet? Have you ever felt stuck? As human beings, we are met with obstacles. When those obstacles become overwhelming, we may feel stuck or confined to thoughts and feelings of failure, defeat, or hopelessness. I believe that our experiences allow us to create unique narratives that tell the stories of our lives. I work with clients to rewrite the stories they feel confined to. I respect the distinct narratives shared by each client and thrive to help them achieve the success they are in search of.

I have worked in a variety of roles in the mental health field, primarily centered around sexual assault/intimate partner violence survivor advocacy and support services, addictions counseling, and women’s issues in counseling.
Each client comes to therapy with their own unique experiences and resources, and I am passionate about working together to discover clients’ strengths and highlighting their resiliencies. I work collaboratively with clients to help them navigate their pain and emerge with more insights and self-compassion, while still honoring their past experiences and holding hopeful space for their future. Additionally, I believe in the power of authenticity and self-acceptance, as well as how a strong, supportive therapeutic relationship can greatly contribute to client success.

I believe we are all born with a palette of colors at our fingertips, and we get to choose when, how, and where we create and what to do when we are faced with a messy palette. It can often feel like your canvas has no potential or that it is already a disaster; however, the fact is you can ALWAYS keep painting, always add new colors, always change the scene. I want to walk with you through that process and assist you with being able to love and care for the life you are in the process of creating.

Our Practice: We’ve been hearing for years from clients about how their previous therapist was a good listener, but they didn’t feel like they made much progress. While active listening is an important skill for a therapist, listening can only go so far. We believe what sets us apart from many other therapists is the fact we actually help you help yourself make the necessary changes in your life by giving you techniques, tools, skills, and guidance to achieve your goals. Additionally, we provide psychological evaluations for children and adults looking for diagnostic clarity to guide treatment recommendations.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
