We all have losses and disappointments that are difficult to think or talk about. These often return over and over, haunting us in our present lives. Instead of escaping those experiences, they reappear in many unexpected places, intruding on our best laid plans. When we can reflect on, and talk about the experiences and the shame and guilt so often associated with them, we are better able to understand and make sense of the patterns that plaque us. There can be a new-found freedom in recognizing our attachment to the needs and desires of those we felt compelled to please. And we can forge a more conscious and hopeful path.

My 30 years of sobriety coupled with my education and experience affords me a unique perspective counseling addicts and families. I trained at the Hanley Center and worked as the primary therapist in the men's unit there for 15 years. I left Hanley for private practice and also serve as clinical director of several South Florida drug and alcohol programs. My client-centered practice uses a variety of techniques to develop coping mechanisms, life skills and coaching to help addicts recognize their vulnerabilities, which lead to compulsive and addictive behaviors and the ensuing shame, depression and anxiety.

I understand that seeking therapy can often feel intimidating. I believe it can be helpful to have an idea of what to expect. An initial session would consist of gaining some background information and exploring what you are seeking counseling for. Every individual is unique and has current and past life experiences that have affected the person in various ways. Issues should be therapeutically addressed based on the individual, as opposed to taking a "one size fits all" approach to therapy. Effective therapy results from empathy, understanding and a collaboration between therapist and client to work towards finding healing and resolving issues.

Are you struggling to enjoy life, yet are not sure what it is that is missing? Or maybe you know what is missing but just can not seem to get there? Creating a safe place where you can get honest with yourself is my first goal. Self-awareness is the first step in resolving ANY problem. Discovering your authentic self is next, and provides you the direction on where you want to go. Life can be hard sometimes, but with the right support and commitment, things DO get better! My goal as a therapist is to help you become your own therapist. I am in network with Aetna, Cigna, United Health Care/Optum.

"What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" asked the poet, Mary Oliver. I've been thinking about this every day since the first time I read it. It's some question, isn't it? Sometimes it inspires me. Sometimes it frightens me. Since it always challenges me, I've rooted my practice philosophy in it. It's kind of like the adult version of “what do you want to be when you grow up”? How in the world do we answer that?
