Additionally, I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a treatment modality that has been extensively researched and shown to be effective for the treatment of trauma as well as treatment-resistant depression and anxiety.
I have been practicing as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in South Florida since 2010. Clients who have had negative experiences with therapy in the past have described me as “the therapist for people who think they hate therapy.” I have a laid-back style and I work collaboratively with my clients to ensure they are getting what they need out of therapy. My therapeutic approach focuses on the mind-body connection. I teach clients to evaluate how mood can be affected by food, sleep habits and physical movement, as well as genetics, thought processes, and trauma.

For decades now, I have been helping people recover from addiction along with those who, seemingly, had a hopeless and helpless state of mind. If you are struggling with addiction stress, anxiety, depression, addictions, trauma, abuse, PTSD, motivation, self-esteem, confidence, or just being stuck, there are answers. Those answers can come in the form of universal truths, principles, evidence-based therapeutic interventions, and Spirituality. If you want to: confront your fears, get a healthy perspective, develop healthier life habits, get relief from stress, and/or work on overcoming challenges, we have a reason to talk.

I believe the foundation to success in therapy starts with the therapeutic relationship between my clients and myself. During your first few sessions with me, you can expect an emphasis to be put on building rapport and developing a greater understanding of you as a whole. While I have experience working with a variety of individuals and diagnoses, I work primarily with adolescents and adults experiencing issues related to depression, anxiety, trauma, and human sexuality.

Are you having problems communicating with your child? Is your child struggling at school or socially? When working with children and teens, it usually involves self-esteem and efficacy problems, often rooted in family dynamics or an inability to get needs met. This is confounded by learning difficulties. I work with those families and individuals having problems with getting their needs met through healthy channels. Often screening or testing identifies areas of treament focus,or the need for speech, occupational or learning specialists.

Do you struggle with a challenging relationship, loss of a sense of self, or trauma that affects your life, relationships, or ability to function at home or at work? Do you feel exhausted, overwhelmed, and frustrated by what it means to live up to someone else’s standards? Now more than ever, people are feeling overwhelmed about overcoming difficult relationships, working through loss, and finding their place in life, or maybe moving past a traumatic event. It shouldn’t be so hard to live better. People can change and there is hope.

Are you feeling overwhelmed, fearful, or uncertain about how to move forward? I understand. I've felt those same feelings. For me, seeking professional guidance was grounded in the realization that the pain of remaining the same was more unbearable than the discomfort of change. Courageously reaching out for professional guidance and support as you embrace your story illuminates your internal strength, resilience, and desire for growth and healing.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
