I am first and foremost a multicultural clinician. I have over 30 years experience and have worked with many populations: all gender descriptions, the GLBTIQ2-S populations and several ethnic populations. I have been fortunate to travel extensively, and experience various cultures. I have a doctorate in Clinical Counselor Education and Supervision.

Navigating transition and uncertainty alone can be daunting and generate fears that keep us stuck. We can feel trapped in our heads, and whether change is something we are actively pursuing or is a condition we feel is forced upon us, it can be difficult to find a way out, especially all on our own! Therapy can be a place to unburden ourselves and share our minds with someone who can provide an outside perspective and help us move forward with purpose. It can also be especially helpful for people who struggle with vulnerability and shame and provide a safe space to express and process emotions and struggles.

Something just isn't right, you are not yourself. Stress, anger, worry, sadness; it is building up and you can’t seem to shake it off. Things aren't going as planned, you are stuck, and what you doing just isn't working. You may even be experiencing self-doubt or acting in uncharacteristic ways. Where did this come from? What did I do to deserve this? How did I let this get away from me? Shame, guilt, blame, and negative thoughts are evident, it is getting hard to see the bright side. Your job, relationship, family, health, or peace of mind are at risk. It is time for a change and deep down inside, you know it.

Life has meaning - even in the most difficult moments. The purpose of our challenges can be obscured by pain, conflict, and uncertainty - but meaning is available to be discovered with a change of perspective. Good values lead the way to better relationships and personal well-being - transforming obstacles into opportunities for growth of self-awareness and a genuine sense of freedom. I offer supportive collaboration and encouragement to the process of establishing right attitude, gaining insight, setting goals, weathering adversity, and making other meaningful changes that increase balance and foster peace of mind.

It's just plain wrong that so many people struggle to be accepting, empathic, and warm toward you. It's their job to do this stuff, right? You may ask why does my therapist struggle to relate to me? Why does my therapist not appreciate the depth of my suffering? Why do I wonder if they truly understand me on a deep level? Your trust is earned not given. You make your own choices about what you do and how you live your life. No one knows more about your life than you do. You don't have to do this alone. I'm here to work with you. I'm here to be a guide with you on the journey and to help you find genuine happiness.

Your relationship doesn’t feel the way you wish it did. Yes, you love each other, but it seems like you fight more often than you don’t these days. Neither of you feels like the other is listening, and you then get caught in cycles you can’t seem to break. Maybe it’s big stuff you’re disagreeing about—money, sex, or parenting—or something seemingly trivial that keeps tripping you up. Or perhaps the relationship you’re struggling with isn’t the one with your partner, but a parent or sibling. Whatever it is you’re facing, you both believe reconnection & repair is possible, and you’re ready to get the support you need to do that.

I believe that how we feel is directly related to the people and experiences within our environment. I also believe that many of us underestimate the connection between mental and physical health. If you feel overwhelmed, anxious, or just at a loss, then it's probably a good time to check in with someone who can offer an objective take on things. Together, we will explore ways for you to feel better equipped to manage difficult thoughts and the feelings that come with them.

I understand the difficulty some people may have seeking counseling. The therapeutic journey begins with the decision to seek help. After making an appointment, the next major step is entering the counselor’s office. My goal of therapy is not to cure anyone, but rather to help people cope more effectively with specific issues and concerns. I help people find hope, clarity, understanding, and emotional courage. My therapeutic approach is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) which is founded in the notion that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors. Essentially, when the client is ready "change is a just a thought away".

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
